Take Wont Somebody Play With Me? Translated By Steven Kellogg E-Text
lucked out at the library yesterday with Sam! This is a cute, funny book with a great message! I remember first reading this book on the day I visited my future kindergarten classroom so my parents and I could meet the teachers.
The illustrations impressed me so much that the imagery still shows up in my dreams sometimes, Always a bit on the graphic side, I was surprised my mom would read this to us, It's Kim's birthday and everyone seems to have forgotten! Miffed folk everywhere will delight in Kim's imagination as she plots revenge on her socalled friends, Its amazing how a book I identified with as a child and have fond memories of reading aloud, especially the one time my parents thought I was actually asking “Wont somebody play with me” is still so relevant to me today.
The story of a little girl who wants to play on her birthday but is rejected at every turn is simply a tale of human nature, Who wouldnt get mad Who doesnt wish they could show their friends how bad it feels when those friends are purposefully abandoning them But despite the story spiraling downward from happiness and expectation to disappointment, sadness, anger, and loneliness, were shown that, in the book as in life, big ups are in store, too, if you just stick around long enough!
And those were just my feelings about the story.
I love the artwork, too, I always loved Steven Kellogg books as a kid and tried to get as many as I could I still possess my childhood collection all because of the pictures.
The art in this particular tome is great for passing on the feelings of the story, The mundane parts, everyday life, are depicted mostly in black and white, while the imaginings of our protagonist and the big reveal at the end are all drawn in bright colors and crazy strokes, as if a child had colored them.
All in all, this remains I didnt realize it was first published back in thes, a decade before I was born! a great
book, A young girl imagines terrible punishments for her three best friends who won't play with her on her birthday, There are very few children's books that I would rate as one star, but this is definitely one, I was reading it to Lucy and it was cute and fun, . . and then the little girl gets mad at her friends and imagines hurting them in various ways with pictures to match rolling over one with a cement truck is the one I remember most clearly.
Uggh. I think Steven Kellogg is great, but I guess our humor just wasn't on the same wavelength this time, Steven Kellogg is an author and illustrator who has contributed overbooks for children, He is best known for writing books about animals, for which he credits his grandmother, .
