Earn Brand Of Magic (Redferne Witches #1) Composed By K.M. Jackways Offered As Kindle
novella was a fun start to a series! I loved the magic in this world its both gentle and exciting, I did have a little trouble keeping all of the characters straight, but it was still a fun read and I loved the New Zealand setting, which was described beautifully.
Hazels familiar, a sarcastic dog named Bonnie, was my favorite character! My thanks to the author for giving me a copy in exchange for my honest review.
A quick cosy read set in Dunedin, with an empath/telepathic witch, Looking forward to the next! DNFA little confusing, like I missed previous books or something, I really loved this adventure in the life of Hazel and her family of Dunedin witches! The family dynamics really shone, I'm looking forward to reading more about the Redferne family.
Granny Em is my favourite, I have to be honest, There was a nice little romance too, that I'm looking forward to seeing develop,
K. M. Jackways' has a way with prose that really captures the New Zealand environment: the colours, the scents, the temperatures, it was so vivid.
I love seeing New Zealand on the page and this was really well done, Their description of office nonsense was also very accurate, though admittedly that made me want to break out in hives we've all met that boss.
The mystery was good, possibly a little too convoluted for a novella that was also setting up a world and a family dynamic, but it meant the book kept a great pace.
Overall I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will look out for Booknext year,
I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest, voluntary review Great short Novel, well written and has you hooked from the first page.
Intriguing start to the series, but felt more like the beginning of a story than a full book, Sweet story from small town New Zealand
Sometimes it's nice to stop and smell the flowers and that's what it felt like reading this novella.
The settings were peaceful and sunny, even in the rain, I liked the slight twist on traditional magic, and that it had a cost, I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily,
This review is going to focus on book one of the Redfern witches series the one I originally signed up for even though I received allbooks plus a prequel.
A very enthusiastic and ambitious book which unfortunately got lost in all this energy imo, Its gonna be.for me.
Hazel comes from a family of witches and lives in her aunts cottage with the ghost of her great grandma love her.
She works for the town and attends a book club, Also, she managed to block out all her powers, We hear mentions of her ex and her cute neighbour obviously the love interest whom business she decides she should stick her nose in even though they dont seem to know each other this is somewhat inconsistent with the prequel which has them talking and liking each other on her moving on day and is supposed to happened “years before” bookI dont recommend reading the prequel.
A bunch of shady stuff happens around her promotion out of the blue, getting knocked on the head at the pool by someone who never goes back, her aunt in hospital and the book finishes on us knowing who did all
this and kinda why but not exactly.
My main struggle was the profusion of détails given out of the blue or completely disconnected from the point its supposed to clarify therefore giving no clarity.
Sometimes something thats clearly supposed to be a resolution is given but either too late or without the actual info needed,
I did enjoy the few trails given here and there to try and guess whats up but they often werent clear enough or never picked up again until the explanation.
Giving the impression of someone going on a tangent about something only they know anything about, So much for the mystery,
A couple of scenes were really good suspens wise though !
Now about the romance Basically this book could have done with choosing between the newly found romance or the mystery or been twice as long.
And to be frank it should have dropped the romance cause it was off I read the start of book, its getting better.
For me to enjoy such reading is has to be veeeery well rounded, I found the alchemy between our“lovers” non existant so that did not work for me, First they barely know each other after years of being neighbours and then they fight out of the blue ! For it to work and be engaging it needed to be better set up cause right now whether theyre gonna kiss or not is the least of our worries.
Another option that could have worked: make the romance start before the book so as to spare us the yes/no/maybe so.
This works in the second book as the relationship is somewhat appease cause they know where they are at but still complicated which both having to adjust to one another.
I enjoyed the little magical details/remedies and such, sprinkled across the story and I also liked that Hazel has a blocage to overcome.
However I do not like the overall vibe of “other witches except those from your family or coven are out to get you” I picked up in the prequel, bookand the start of book.
All this being said, it remained an enjoyable and quick read and I will read bookand, Still trying to figure out the point of the prequel though Hazel Redferne is a marketing professional and a witch who has lately seen her magical power wane.
She used to be able to sense people's thoughts and emotions, but that ability is fading just as she needs it most, For Hazel has just struck a deeper acquaintance with her handsome neighbor Joel who has found himself in financial difficulties, but refuses to divulge the reason why.
Meanwhile, Hazel's aunt Briar a fellow witch and a leader of their coven is in hospital after a mysterious attack at a supermarket, and is refusing to talk.
The only thing Hazel can hear are snippets of her frantic calls for help from inside the body in which she is trapped.
Hazel decides to perform a grounding ceremony, after which her powers return with an even greater strength, making it hard for her to concentrate amidst the stream of thoughts of everyone around her.
But she must push on as evidence emerges that Joel's financial troubles and the attack on Briar may be related,
Set amid the lush landscape of coastal Otago, New Zealand, Brand of Magic is an engaging story for fans of mystery, witchcraft, and romance.
Oh my!
I know that this is probably someone's first attempt at writing a book novella and this book had so much potential but it seriously missed the mark, all of the marks actually.
The characters were not likeable I was actually confused most of the time as to why they were actually so terrible, The story was choppy and inconsistent, So much information given in snapshots to accommodate thepage length, The conclusion of this novel was unfortunately lacking in, . well conclusion. Grand mom came and withwords saved the day What, .
The book had so much potential, . . smh!.
