Explore Welcome Home: Variations On A Jane Austen Christmas ('Tis The Season Collection) Authored By Mary Smythe Available In Paper Copy

has a nice full circle moment from beginning to end which I appreciated, I dont think thats a common narrative method employed in JAFF that often, and its one I happen to adore, so I was all for it.

The plot was rather average and I dont think it was long enough to really get to level of depth that I wanted in the characters, but it was still enjoyable, if not fully engaging.

Think short, sweet, and thats about it, Darcy has a Christmas vision and later Tiny Tim hurts his leg

Darcy is injured in a small carriage mishap which later causes a Christmas vision.
He sees himself married to Lizzy and decides it is a vision of what could happen and decides to marry her,

But there is nothing in the vision on how to woo someone he has called not tolerable enough to tempt him, The rest of the story is about how to make the vision real,

Mary Smythe wrote this story based on what would have happened if Darcy had a dream/vision about what life married to Elizabeth would be and decided to work to achieve that life.
This books plot really picks up after Christmas while Jane was still in London, All the characters behave in a manor that ones expects, Elizabeth does not like Darcy when they meet again, but similar to the original with time those emotions change, I love this variation, it still stays true to the original characters, but moves up the timeline, Utterly Stirring

unsuitable, yet vexingly appealing, Miss Elizabeth.

Treacherous winter conditions abound, and his driver recommends they stop at an inn in Lambton, but they may be stuck there over Christmas, maybe even until New Years if they do so.
Darcy, seeing as they are in the home stretch, says risk it and press on, And so they do, when suddenly

Next thing Darcy knows, he is stumbling through the doors of Pemberley, donning a figurative halo of twittering birds about his muddled head, and being greeted by his enthusiastic wife Miss Elizabeth But what is she doing here And is this a dream, delusion, insanity, wishful thinking Or something else entirely mayhaps divine intervention

How will this glimpse into a potential marital bliss this one day, risk free trial, if you will with the tender care and devotion of a guileless woman, impact his resolve to put the eminently unsuitable miss out of his mind

A dream A vision
Darcy is on his way back to Pemberley and recalls a memory of Elizabeth Bennet when she arrived at Netherfield to care for Jane.

“To see her standing there in the breakfast parlour, eyes brightened by exercise and clothes spattered in mud in the service of attending her ailing sister, had awakened a longing within Darcy that he had not experienced since he was a boy.
The longing to be loved, ”
quote from book

Yes, Fitzwilliam Darcy longed to be loved, Sighhhh. dear man. When he finally arrives home, he is welcomed by ElizabethMrs, Darcy. Except he has no memory of marrying her, Hardly believing this circumstance, his joy is nevertheless complete, Sadly, he awakens the next morning to discover it was a dream,

“Darcy nearly collapsed in grief as he realised it had all been a dream, A wonderful, impossible dream. His face buried between his palms, he fought mightily against the compulsion to sob, ”quote from book

A dream Or was it a vision of future events Whatever it was, Darcy decides he will absolutely marry Elizabeth.
Before his happy ending is achieved, however, he will have to experience the emotional journey that will take him first to London and Bingley, then to Kent where he unexpectedly finds Elizabeth again and, lastly back to Meryton, where Caroline attempts to spoil everythingand finally, a true welcome home to Pemberley.

There are moments of Darcy here that make you love him all over again , in a wonderfully new way, This is a well rounded, fully filled out story from a great author who has become a leading light in the genre, Thank you Mrs. Smythe and merry Christmas! Welcome Home is a fun, lowangst Christmas PampP variation, The story is a fun twist, Darcy is particularly wonderful, Caroline is fantastically terrible, and the editing is excellent, If you are someone who enjoys solid writing, you will like this book, Ms. Smythe is particularly adept at delightful descriptions that make the story come alive, I had to reread several sections over again, just to savor the mental image her words created, I would give examples, but I dont want to diminish the joy of discovering them on the page, You will just have to read this book and delight in them yourself!
