If this kind of humor appeals to you, this book is for you, Mostly by letting the protagonists do the talking, Lardner's stories run the gamut of weakness and wickedness with their concomitant hypocrisy in a way that will make you grin from ear to ear.
One of the stories I did not like "Horseshoes": way too long and way too much baseball shop, My favorite was "Champion" a downright tragic and frighteningly realistic story about a boxing champ who victimizes everyone along the way to the top, but whose reputation nonetheless does not suffer since he is the champ.

One of the single greatest laughs ever to be had is in one of these stories perfectly conceived and executed, And you don't see it coming, A master writer. shazam! i'm reading ring lardner again and this time it really crystallizes for me why i like him so much, it's this voice that always puts me in that barber chair, or pulls up a stool beside me at the bar, this simple and persuasive voice of a master raconteur.
i have a serious penchant for this anecdotal tone, this folksy style, reminiscent of o, henry, promoted by fitzgerald, admired and emulated by my favourite salinger, the subtle yet insistent vernacular sits me down every time and i am fully acclimatized, it's simple straight forward finelytuned storytelling and i admire the hell out of it,

Just ten stories are found in these pages, including the often and justly anthologized wellknown lardner stories like the eponymous "haircut", "i can't breathe", "a day with conrad green", "the love nest" and "the golden honeymoon".
there is a mix of slice of life and the sporting life before fitzgerald championed his fiction, lardner was primarily known a sportswriter who loved baseball, and this passion is reflected in the inclusion of "alibi ike" and "horseshoes".


in revisiting these stories, i find "i can't breathe" still so knowing it is the blue print of the emptyheaded love struck teen, reprint this puppy in a teen magazine today and i know they'd relate even if it was first published in, along these lines, the notions of a perfect marriage, and love are challenged in "the love nest" in a way that would ring a bell for anyone familiar with those real plastic housewives of greedywood county.


that said, there are a few times where it's clear lardner's stories are relics of their time there are offthecuff racist remarks that reflect the age, and then there's this joke in alibi ike, about his family living in the post office which always makes me wish for an annotated edition, as i don't get the joke any more than ike does.
for those that wonder how i can abide lardner given my usual aversion to satire, all i can say is that he writes the bathos and pathos of the lives he describes in a way that charms me, and they are married perfectly within his satirical world view.
i love lardner i only wish i had more of his stories on hand,

קניתי את הספר בחשש מה. יש לי ניסיון קצת עגום עם העורך אוריאל קון, ביתר דיוק עם הספרים שהוציא לאור באופן עצמאי. חלק מהיצירות שבחר להוציא לאור היו מאכזבות מבחינת רמתן, אבל זה בסדר מבחינתי. על טעם וריח אין להתווכח. חלקן היו יצירות חשובות ומעניינות אך אולי בשל הזדרזות יתר להוציאן לאור, או אופי חפיפניקי תרגומן היה לקוי, רצוף שגיאות, לעיתים באופן שממש הרס את הקריאה ובייש אותן. שקלתי לקרוא את הספר באנגלית. בכל זאת האסופה קבלה ביקורות טובות מחברים כאן ב goodreads ובסופו של דבר, כשמצאתי פרוטה בכיסי, רכשתי את הספר.

אז לפני ההתייחסות לסיפורים עצמם אתייחס לצד הטכני. התרגום ועריכתו אינם חפים משגיאות עד כמה שאני יכול להתרשם וזה חבל. נראה לי שהיו כמה שגיאות מביכות ממש מבחינת מספרים ומין שם העצם בעברית. ושני מקומות בהם התרגום היה כל כך מילולי מאנגלית שהמשפט המתורגם נשמע ממש עילג בעברית. הוסיפו לכך כמה שגיאות דפוס מיותרות ותבינו שחשותי לא היו בלתי מוצדקות. יחד עם זאת משתי סיבות חוויית הקריאה לא נפגמה. ראשית התרגום כן היה מוצלח מבחינת ההעברה לעברית מדוברת. הדיאלוגים והמונולוגים שולטים בסגנון כתיבתו של לרדנר והתרגום שלהם לעברית מדוברת צלח והפך את הספר לקריא ביותר. שנית, לרדנר מרבה להשתמש בסלנג ושפה מדוברת שיש בה שגיאות גם במקור, כך שקשה היה להתרשם אם אכן יש בעיה בתרגום או ביתר דיוק היה קל "להחליק" את השגיאות בתירוץ זה.

והעיקר איך הסיפורים הסיפור הראשון חביב אך אינו מרשים. לשמחתי העסק השתפר בהמשך. הסיפור השני כבר היה מצחיק למרות ואולי בגלל ההתחכמויות בכל משפט שני והשאר היו טובים מאוד אפילו. ופתאום כאמור הספר הסתיים והשאיר אותי עם טעם של עוד.

טרחו והוסיפו לספר גם שתי "אחרית דבר". הראשונה מתהדרת בלא פחות משתי כותרות מפוצצות, ארוכות יותר מכל האחרית עצמה. לו רק הייתה תורמת איזו תובנה להבנת הסיפורים. אבל מחברה הסתפק ברשימה של חידושים טכנולוגיים מראשית המאה העשרים ומופעיהם בסיפורים. אין זה נחוץ. כל קורא בעל דמיון מבין את הסיפורים גם ככה. באשר לטכנולוגיה היה ניתן לצרף את אחרית הדבר הזאת באותה מידה של הצלחה לספריהם של שני תריסרי סופרים שפעלו בארה"ב באותה תקופה ועדין לא לצאת נחכמים באיזשהו אופן.

"אחרית הדבר" השנייה היא פרי הגיגיו של מר קון עצמו. כבר יצא לי לקרוא כמה מאלו ולא ציפיתי ליותר מידי. לפחות כאן הוא חסך מאיתנו פילוסופיות בגרוש ומונחים אקמיים. יחד עם זאת היא מסתכמת ב name dropping המחבר היה חבר של פיצ'רלד וכמעט פגש בקונרד, אנקדוטות לא חשובות בעליל והמלצות על מוזיקה מהתקופה. ההתלהבות המבורכת שלו כעורך ניכרת כאן אך כמו שאומרים אם אין לך משה חכם להגיד, מוטב לא לומר דבר. .
