Archie Goodwin is staying in Montana to investigate the murder of a man a lot of people would have liked to see dead.
The main suspect is a man whose daughter was impregnated by the murder victim, the previous year,

Archie and Nero believe this man is innocent, but they are the only ones who do, We meet a lot of people through Archie who interviews anyone and everyone connected to the man who was murdered and might have a motive.


The ending is quite good and, while it was hard to keep track of everyone, the logic stayed on track and the conclusion was interesting and believable.
This book isn't one of the shining in the Wolfe firmament, but it features Wolfe going to MONTANA because ARCHIE, so I enjoy it very much.
Maybe.but I really missed Wolfe in the first quarter of this book, And I wish this had been one to make it to the screen Wolfe wandering around Montana, shaking hands, removing his shoes, . . priceless. See my comments on "Full House" for review Archie was in Montana when the murder happened and he wrote to Nero that his vacation would have to be longer than planned.
Sure enough, Nero traveled to Montana to help out because his life depends on his having Archie as his foil and his right arm in solving mysteries.
To complicate matters further for the reader, there is no client, The reader has no background from which to observe,

I much prefer Archie and Nero in the Brownstone onth in New York City, In Montana the wonderful relationship between the two is mostly missing, Those of us who have read enough of the series to know what should be there can fill in the blanks sort of, At the same time, I knew this was thin on what makes this series so darned good, And I felt that loss,

It's hard for me to imagine a Nero Wolfe that is so poor as to garner onlystars, but I'm afraid this comes pretty close.

У меня не получается пока знакомиться с книгами о Ниро и Арчи в цикличном порядке: первая, шестая и похоже сейчас гдето аж семидесятая, если учесть все повести и рассказы. В чемто это может и к лучшему, потому что мне понравилась эта история больше тех, что я читала раньше то ли я привыкла к повествованию, то ли автор стал писать лучше, то ли просто звезды сошлись и все молодцы. И что смешно, я знаю, как не любит Ниро Вульф выбираться из своего дома/кабинета и читаю вторую книгу, где ему приходится это делать, один раз изза орхидей, а второй раз изза Арчи, который намекает, что он не вернется к Ниро, пока не разберется в деле, где точно не виноват тот, кого в этом обвиняют. И бедный Ниро, мало того, что обязан звонить по телефону, так еще и отправиться в Монтану! Ну и в Монтане ему тоже приходится мириться с неудобствами. Чего только стоят пожатия рук! Но Ниро целеустремленный человек, когда дело касается его удобства, а тут знаете ли, еще опять Арчи попадает в тюрьму!

Переводчик явно молодец, потому что травмированная плохим переводом первой книги, где встречается вечно "мой хозяин", я начинаю нервничать, беря в руки книгу от Стаута, ожидая, что на меня опять это раболепство посыплется, а еще сильно боюсь попасть в атмосферу беспредела. В моем переводе от Александра Санина, хозяева встречались только в качестве тех, кто пускал людей на постой, а беспредел был удивительным образом снижен и это учитывая, что человек занимался переводом в. Книга кажется даже уютной, ловля рыбы, поездки на лошадях, сбор ягод, пикник у реки и танцы в местном клубе. Полное ощущение, что не было смерти человека, тем более учитывая, что никто особо по этому хлыщу и не страдает. А уж описания блюд такие, что я со вздохом в ночи, дочитывая книгу, поползла в кухню, потому что ну невозможно же!

Отношения между Ниро и Арчи явно стали уютнее и от этого приятнее. Арчи раскрылся както больше, он уже не ревнивец или просто драчун, каким виделся в первые книги, а интересный персонаж, умеющий рассуждать, понимающий опасность и то, как с ней справляться и очень тепло и дружески относящийся к Ниро. И вот то, что он иногда позволяет себе посмеяться над ним, как раз говорит о том, что он знает, что это ему позволено. К тому же шутки у него не на глазах у всех, он не стремится унизить Ниро, при зрителях, он делает так, чтобы возвысить этого человека, показать его уникальность и власть, выделяя для него даже специальное место. И Арчи может объяснить каждое свое действие, он не менее остер в вылавливании ситуации и фактов, как и Ниро, только он слишком быстр и поэтому проскакивает мимо какихто очевидных завязочек между людьми в отличие от Ниро, хотя в этой книге кажется, что действительно расследование провел Арчи и будь у него времени, которого не было, он смог бы и сам до много дойти. Очень интересная история, которая объединяет героев показывая, как они стали похожи и при этом остались разными. Какие между ними удивительные взаимоотношения. Семидесятая книга, они уже почти семья Мне понравилось такое наполнение в книге больше, чем само расследование, оно как будто было именно для того, чтобы рассказать нам об отношениях главных героев

Со всей той быстротой, что требовалась в решении кто же убийца, книга получилась медлительной, насыщенной. В нее интересно погружаться, но все же больше не в детектив, а в людей. Ну и как любой детектив, тут книга на любителей этой парочки, возможно, она будет хороша и для знакомства с героями, потому что после нее будет проще читать другие книги уже зная какой на самом деле Арчи и как каждый герой относится друг к другу.

The plot's not much, but it is serviceable, and Nero roughing it in the Wild West is something no Rex Stout fan will want to miss.
It's a truism in Wolfe World that Nero never leaves the house on business, This trope is not borne out in the canon it seems Archie is always dragging him away from his custommade chair, either by chicanery or because he really needs help.
This time he even gets the Big Boss to take an airplane out to the sticks of Big Sky Country, spend a couple of days in Lily Rowan's luxury "cabin" and eat soup out of a tin!

I had confused this book with another in which Lily invites some of her cowboy friends to the Big Apple to take part in a roping contest what was my surprise when I realised I had never read it before!! It was fun to have a new Wolfe story, but there were a few quibbles.
It would have rated four and a half if it hadn't been for the intensive Americanflag waving that went on for pages in the middle of the investigation.
True, I know that many people out in "God's country" feel that way, and that Stout himself was a flagwaver of no mean dimensions, but it didn't really add anything at all to the narrative.
Perhaps it reflects the times it was written in, and Stout's reaction to the civil unrest in the US, The development of the story also reflects the period it was published in: city slicker shamus Archie falls into the hands of hick town cop and gets roughed up though not as bad as could be expected and taken off to the hoosegow on the flimsiest of evidence.
So far so Perry Mason/Rockford Files/Ironside etc, of the period. I fully expected said hick town cop to be implicated in the killings, but we were spared that trope at least, It was awfully TVfamiliar though, and that cost the fourth star, By the end of the book Archie actually says, instead of tidying up all the loose ends, "Nuts! Why annoy you with it" and just ends in one sentencegiving the impression that the author himself was tired of the whole thing as well.


No Fritz, no brownstone, no good meals, darn little of Saul Panzer, Sigh. It wasn't badly written, or anything except the last chapterit just isn't what I want when I pick up a Nero Wolfe yarn, .
