can't say that I actualy read every single word but I did read the running commentary and read a few of the articles closely.
I found it interesting to read the

history of the conventions as well as the controvercies around them.


One of the things that I learned that I feel stupid for not realizing before is that the role of the International Red Cross/Red Crescent is actually called out in the conventions and their role in time of conflict is defined by them.
I also learned why the detainees in Guantanamo Bay do not receive Geneva Convention protections,

I can't say I recommend reading them directly unless you are a soldier, diplomat, or expect to enter into major armed conflict with a govenrment but knowing the basics I think it worth while.
The text of the Geneva Conventions and of their Additional Protocols is very complex and not always easily understood by the layperson.
A simplified work was needed to present and explain these international law treaties to an everincreasing number of readers.
