this is just a bit of nostalgia, but I enjoyed reading this one, I saw the cover and immediately remembered reading this back in high school, There is just something about the heroine's gamin look that I rememberedyeas later! Since this is an older HP it is rather tame, but somehow the story just grabbed my interest once again.
A young woman is recovering from a virulent flu and has been invited by her best friend to accompany her on a trip to Northumberland to visit her godmother.
Since she has lost her job, she agrees to go in the hope that rest and relaxation will restore her health, The sooner she is better, the quicker she can go back to work, Of course, she is met by Hero at the door who is rude to her and her friend, Seems he tried to dissuade the friend from coming since his grandmother was very ill,

And this is where this HP was different from all the rest, This heroine really stood up to him with such class, The author did such a great job of creating a heroine that just charmed me, Of course, as soon as she opens her mouth the hero realizes what a jackass he is, and spends the rest of the book trying to recover from his less than gracious welcome.
He also can't resist her charm and falls like a ton of bricks,

I just finished it, and I still have a smile on my face, I like it when a book stands up to the test of time,
Again, this is very light on the physical side of things, so if that isn't your cup of tea, I would recommend a pass.
However, if you are in a mood for something a little old fashioned, a little sweet, but quite romantic, then this one just might hit the spot.

I had read this before just felt like reading it again, One of those books that don't require you to think, just sit back and enjoy! Just what I needed! The h and her friend have been invited to her friend's Godmother's castle in Northumbria.
The h is recovering from a bad bout of flu, When they arrive it is clear they are not welcomed by the Godmother's grandson Dimitre, He is quite rude and then the h faints and he feels awful, She insists on lesving after the weekend,
Later she is hired to be the companion/secretary to the godmother, The H appears to be seriously interested in another woman and he's convinced that she just took the job to be close to a male friend from her home village has recently come to work in the area.
He blows hot and cold and she's very confused,
This a typical HQN where just a little honest communication would have stopped alot of anguish and heartache, Of course then there wouldn't be a story, It was an average/ok old skool romance, That was boring, boring and very boring, Aww. This is a sweet vintage "enemies to lovers" story that is fairly light on the romance, but evokes another era and way of living so strongly that I felt as if I had timetraveled to a castle in Northumberland and had spent restful days gazing at the sea while kindly servants catered to my every wish.

The plot is simple, The shop girl heroine is invited by her rich friend to convalesce after a bout of flu in her godmother's castle in Northumberland, When the two girls arrive, the hero is angry they have barged in when his grandmother is ill, The heroine is mortified that she is intruding and she faints while the hero is being difficult, The hero realizes he's been less than welcoming and tries to make up for his bad behavior,

The heroine is having none of it, She leaves two days later, although she still isn't recovered, She spends time at her father's house and runs across a neighbor OM who is by coincidence, taking at a baliff job near the castle.
They go around together and end their two weeks of "dating" by going to the theater in London where they run into the hero and his date, a dancer who has been chasing him for quite awhile.

The hero asks the h if she would be interested in being a companion to his grandmother and the heroine accepts, Once the heroine is ensconced in the castle, she and the hero spend a lot of time together, It's all going well the hero is obviously smitten until the hero finds out about the OM living nearby, He thinks the heroine took the job to be near the OM not because she really cared about his grandmother or him,

He leaves in a snit

This is a slow burn of a romance, Both the H/h are sensitive, high strung people, so the misunderstandings really stem from their characters as much as the machinations of the author.
This is a little vintage time capsule and worth reading if you need a break from the modern world, Thanks to Leona for sending me a copy!

When Judith was only partially recovered from a bout of 'flu, her friend Ann took her to convalesce at her godmother's fascinating castle on the Northumbrian coast.
But her convalescence was cut short by the chilly welcome of Lady Markham's grandson, After a bad bout of the flu, the heroine Judith is taken by her friend to her godmothers castle in Northumberland to recuperate, Unfortunately upon arrival they are met by the owners grandson the hero who makes it clear they are both most unwelcome, Judith who is basically a little brown mouse takes his comments to heart and wants to leave which she does two days later,

Having regret over his treatment he tries to apologise to Judith but she more or less refuses to accept it, Later on he asks her when he finds her back down south to be his grandmothers paid companion, she happily accepts, After that theres quite a bit of angst that happens, lots of misunderstandings mostly of the heros making,

This was originally published in, and in parts it shows, somethings were quite funny which made this story a little dated, I wasnt crazy about the hero who confusingly seemed to have two different names, Dmitri/Sir Anthony Markham, he was to coin a phrase as thick as two short planks.
While the heroine was shy and mousey I liked that when challenged she certainly knew how to stand up for herself, Overall this wasnt too bad for ayear old story, The H was a gigantic baby and he was a big gameplayer with a cruel streak, What's not to love Oh yeah, EVERYTHING, I was disappointed with the hero in this one, Brown Mouse meets Donkey's Butt, Lord of the titular castle, Donkey's Butt has a sexy girlfriend, Jessica Rabbit, but his grandma doesn't approve, Donkey's Butt tries to have his Mouse and eat his Rabbit too but Brown Mouse is not as wobbly and weak as he thought, so regretfully, he has to send Jessica Rabbit on her way after all.

Honestly, this was so disappointing, The heroine, despite her Mary Sueishness was quite enjoyable, She gave the arrogant stooge of a hero just breathtaking setdowns,

Unfortunately, she was wasted on a sub par hero who, in the midst of his marriage proposal, pretty much admits he has been sexing the OW up to the last minute.
And his marriage proposal was AWFUL! "Grandmother wants to see us married, . . and I want that too, very much, darling, " Ugh! Gag me with a spoon!

OW is predictably sent off with a movie contract to glam Hollywood and hero will at some point in the future resume his sleazy affair with
