love how the book was constructed, Getting a glimpse of author and her child, through her daily diary, Also in the book, she explained thoroughly all about autism, including the laws that protects them,
I enjoyed this book, because the setting of the book is quite familiar with me, I'm glad also that there are NGOs and groups in the Philippines for autism child and its family member, to be able to share their experiences with other families.
I have previously read the same genre book, but with an author from the US entitled "Strange Son" by Portia Iversen, I love both books, the only difference is that Fanny Garcia is more descriptive on all thing to know about autism and what she has done on her own means to teach and care for her son, Erick.
Garcia.
My first book read about autism and really enjoyed it because the author is Fanny Garcia, I met her two years ago when she agreed to guest in our sitelinkPinoy Reads Pinoy Books bookclub, The interview was for her short story collection sitelinkSandaang Damit At Iba Pang Maikling Kuwento, The bookclub has been in existence foryears now but for me, that has been the most unforgettable interview, Garcia is a longtime academician so she speaks clearly and direct to the point, She is also a prolific writer so she also knows how to capture your attention and imagination with her answers, She also volunteers topics that she thinks you want to know, She is a realist when she said that her writing is just a passion and it is not enough to support her and her autistic child, nowish, Erick.
In the bookclub, we normally read a book for our monthly read, with the intention of holding an interview with its author, Books after books have passed, Still, I fondly recall the unforgettable experience of being in front of Garcia, Hearing her talk her mind, pouring our her heart, So, I picked up this book Journeys with My Autistic Son, I liked the book and I thought that it ebbed my longing to interview Garcia again, Reading the book felt like she is talking to you in an interview, My only fault is that I bought and read this English translation and not the one in original Filipino our mother tongue, I am not saying that Anna Marie Santiago Oblepias did not make a good translation, What I am saying is that it would have given me more "authentic" reading experience if I read the original version,
This book was Garcia's birthday gift to her son Erick, It was supposed to be given when he turnedbut it got delayed for some reason and Garcia was only able to publish this in time for Erick'sst birthday.
This is also Garcia's urgent plea for Philippine government to consider putting up a home for autistic children where they can learn to support themselves.
Other countries have this home where autistic children get education, learn livelihood and are taken care of, This is urgent and critical because what happens to the autistic child if his/her parents are already dead and they no longer have relatives who really have the heart to love with them
I am not sure if the Philippine Government heeded Garcia cry for help.
I have been seeing copies of this book whenever there is sale in National Book Store, I hope more people read this book as this is very informative and make us all aware of autistic people's flight in the world we are all living in.
Prior to this book, I did not care about autism as I did not have any good real experience with anybody having this condition, Now, I feel outright sympathy when I see an autistic in a restaurant Sarsa at SM Megamall just last week for example or walking inside the mall on weekends with they parents or along the street while I am in the car stuck in traffic.
As I see them, I remember this book, I remember Garcia and Erick and say a short prayer for them, “Fanny A. Garcias work is a major contribution to Philippine writing, It is not only creative writing, it is a humanitarian document as well, being an account of a mothers efforts to bring up a Special Child cast in the form of a popular scrapbook that a creative sensibility has transformed into an absorbing narrative with its own characters vividly drawn from real life.
