not a bad read, I liked the characters. Not a slow read but not that exciting, This story was such a disappointment, It's a classic example of an author having a cool idea and going fullsteam ahead with it without taking the time to realize that the plotline actually isn't that cool and turned the FMC into a terrible person.
If this is your first time reading Shari Anton, read At Her Service instead, which is one of my rarestar reads,

The basic plot involves Leah and Geoffrey meeting on a ship, there's a shipwreck and Geoffrey saves Leah's life, gets badly injured and she saves his life.
Geoffrey is in a coma for a while and because this is medieval times, people are giving Leah a hard time about being near Geoffrey if they're not married so when people naturally assume they're married, she decides to go with it because it allows her to stay near him and make sure he's properly cared for.
Later, she decides to bring him to her family's manor to ensure he has a safe place to continue recovering he's still in a coma throughout all of this.
Again, she knows her family will not let a random strange man stay in their home so she continues pretending they're married, This showed she's intelligent and is willing to bend the truth a little in order to save Geoffrey's life, I really liked her at this point,

Unfortunately, once Geoffrey wakes up and Leah realizes he has amnesia, she makes the inexplicable decision to lie to him and tell him they're really married.
This is when my opinion of her changed completely, She had been battling a bad reputation due to a previous relationship that had gone south and her family looks on

her more favorably when they think she's now married to somebody.
Her family was a bunch of smuggling criminals and they treated her horribly anyway, so I had no issues with her continuing to lie to her family.
But there was no reason for her to keep lying to Geoffrey, He would have played along while he was recovering, But she decides maintaining her new reputation is her main priority and she doesn't want to risk him telling her family the truth, and that's her justification for continuing to lie to him.
As he gets more suspicious and more mobile, her antics to preserve the lie get worse and worse as she deliberately keeps his personal belongings away from him in case it triggers his memory, which they later do after he finds the items on his own.
In addition, Geoffrey had made it clear to Leah on the ship that he had to hurry home to help his sister with a specific situation she's being forced to marry somebody against her will.
Leah didn't know the specifics, but her continued efforts to prevent him from regaining his memories meant Geoffrey never went to help his sister, which was another mark against her.


I was also uncomfortable with the continued deception because it made Geoffrey assume he had a stable romantic relationship with Leah so he engaged in behavior that he may have been uncomfortable engaging in if he knew they were basically strangers ex.
being half dressed around her, allowing her to help him bathe, kissing her, sharing a bedroom with her,

The entire marriage lie plotline was stretched out to create thebreakup plotline that many romance books have and stretching it out that long made the entire book drag.
I was also uncomfortable with Leah and the rest of her smuggling family forcing Geoffrey to unknowingly become involved in illegal activities by having him work on the smuggling accounting ledger in order to earn his keep while not telling him that the ledger recorded illegal activities.
So every character took advantage of Geoffreys amnesia, Wonderful. That's the thanks he gets for having saved Leah's life,

I love Shari Anton's writing and I can see why she thought this marriage lie plotline was a good idea, but I really dislike how it turned Leah into a bad person.
This boob of Shari Anton wasn't my favorite of her works, But good reading rated this very good to excellent at the time I read it in JanIn the beginning I wasnt so sure, it was taking me a bit to get in to it but in the end it turned out being a decent read.
I liked Geoffrey, his character, personality, disposition, He was like the perfect man, kind, humble, honorable not to mention tall and handsome, . . almost too perfect. Cute take on a cliché I could not believe Anton wrote this, stoopid! This author came highly recommended,

I believe it is set during medieval times but I'm not familiar with this period, . . the time frame is.

Regardless, not being a stickler for historical accuracy, I've just rated this book based on my enjoyment level scale, . . and I really enjoyed it,

Lady Leah h meets Geoffrey H at the railing of their ship while he is trying desperately not to upchuck all over himself in front of her.
The Dover cliffs loom before them, but before they can dock the storm tossed ship meets it's end when it is torn to smithereens, leaving few to survive.
Geoffrey heroically assures Leah is to be one of the survivors, . . at the cost of his own life,

Leah does survive, and the lying begins,

In spite of tragic situations, I had to laugh as Leah's lies finally got to the point that she was good and caught in their web.
. . knowing all the while that her time would eventually come when she had to come clean or get so trapped she had to get found out.
I was really looking forward to when that would happen, And I wasn't disappointed.

Although the story is set in the mid's, the characters seemed to have a few modern day overtones, Did they use the word "Damn" back in the's I don't know, but it's use didn't spoil the story for me,

Geoffrey ends up in Dover where he is condemned to death by the physician tending the few survivors, Everyone assumes he is Leah's husband and she just lets them assume away, When the dock is to be cleared for new ships coming in, she is at a dilemma, . . leave this unconscious dying man who saved her life and who everyone thinks is her husband or take him with her as she returns to her father's Keep with her tail between her legs after her dishonorable romp in France

This turned into a really fun story in spite of tragic events and murderous schemes.

This was interesting and fun to read besides the characters seem to react in the way that felt right, He was her hero
