temptress Lilith Straight didnt forge her contract with the Devil, shes obligated to obey it, But upon hearing the dastardly details of her latest assignment, Lilith vows to wriggle out from under the Devils thumb one way or another.
Unfortunately, Hell is in chaos, her bff is AWOL, and her elevenyearold nieces fascination with the supernatural is tempting her to explore the otherworld.
If only William Darcy, the hottest demon in Hell, would put the brakes on his own ego and give her a hand, Lilith might stand a chance.
I can't wait for the next one! Straight by the Rules is the third installment in the Lilith Straight series and is as great as the first two.
The story follows Lilith as she desperately tries to balance her "normal" life with her succubus life, However, as she is sent on her crazy assignments she is finding this balance harder to find, I don't think I'll ever look at sushi the same way,
After her latest set of assignments, Lilith is more desperate than ever to get out of her contract as a succubus and will go to any lengths to find a way.
As she tests the limits of her contract, she tries to stay true to herself as much as possible,
Oh yes, and we got some more William in this book, Who would not love to be seduced by him My impression of the series took a better turn, I enjoyed this one more, Is it that the characters finally hit their stride or was it personal Was I too distracted to be engaged before
It is still fluffy compared to Kitty Norville et al but a fun read.
taken from my blog, sitelinkPen to Paper,
I adore this series! I knew, as soon as I started reading the first book, Straight to Hell, that I would really enjoy it, and by the time I'd finished it, I felt confident that I would end up loving the whole series book two, Straight to Heaven, definitely helped to confirm this.
And now that I've finished book three, I'm absolutelysure that I will love every book in the series!
Straight by the Rules begins with something we've never seen before an 'Authorized Personnel Only' door, that Lilith and her demon cannot enter or could, but for once, her succubus is afraid! I was immediately drawn into the story by this.
I had to know what was behind that door! This is a similar situation to being given a large, red button, with an attached sign that says 'Do not push'.
. . that button is getting pushed, It's the same with the door eventually that thing is going to be opened, Without saying too much, when it is opened, and we find a possibly theory of what the doors are, this adds a really interesting, new dimension to not only the story, but also to Helen Spry's Lilith's demon overlord's character.
What could possibly frighten her, and why I really want to find out more, and see what else might be behind those doors!
If possible, Lilith's character was even more feisty in this book, than in the others.
Okay, so she had her moments where she struggled, or cowered in fear, but when you work in hell, and your boss is Helen Spry, this is understandable! But the rest of the time, she was certainly at the top of her game so much so, that she plots to beat Helen at her own game, and get one over on her, whilst still technically doing things by the rules.
It took a lot of bravery on her part to do this I'm not sure I could have done it, and to defy Helen in other ways as well, and because of this, I loved her even more!
At the end of the book, her character becomes even more interesting than before.
There is a huge twist at the very end, that I'm obviously not going to give away, but it explains a couple of things about Lilith, including how she can enter Heaven, and do it without dying, and I can't wait to find out what else this means for her, and how her life will change because of it.
I also couldn't get enough of the new developments in her relationship with William Darcy, her Incubus counterpart, He'd spent the last two books doing pretty much nothing but try and get her into bed, but now she means a lot more to him than before a lot more than he'd imagined she would.
This relationship has never been without its difficulties, but now it's even more complex than ever, Their relationship is definitely becoming a more passionate one, and there is more genuine care for one another on both sides, This is apparent from the first time we see them together in this novel, I really want to see how they manage to deal with what is inevitably going to come their way next,
So, this instalment in the series focuses on Lilith trying to find a way out of her contract with the devil a curse passed down to the firstborn females in her family line, thanks to her ancestor, Sarah Goodswain, and also trying to do her job as a seductress, following the rules to the letter, whilst attempting to have something positive come out of her situation for all involved.
This is a difficult job on its own, but it's made worse by Miss Spry's new assistant, Deliliah, who can't quite get the hang of her job, and by the family drama that occurs as usual throughout the book.
This family drama mostly revolves around Tommy and Jasmine, I'm just going to warn again, before I continue, that this is a spoiler alert for the previous two books, so if
you haven't read them yet, stop reading for now As we know, Lilith had to seduce Tommy, as an order from Helen, and ever since then, even though he loves Jasmine, her sister, he can't get Lilith out of his head.
She spends her free time trying to get the couple back together, but keeps hindering herself, thanks to her own succubus, I love how she dealt with this in the end it just proves how strong she is as a character,
The only thing I think I'd change about the book and this really is a marginal thing, would be that I'd want to see a little more of Grace, Lilith's daughter.
I know that she was not an essential part of the plot of this book in the series unlike Ari, her niece, but it would have been nice to see her come back from France, and round the novel off with Lilith and Grace being reunited.
She's a really sweet little girl, so hopefully we'll see her early on in the next book!
And talking of the next book, I absolutely can't wait to find out what happens next especially now that Lilith is no longer fighting her battle alone! You'll have to read it to find out who and why!
Another fantastically fun, entertaining and sexy read from Michelle Scott.
I definitely recommend this series! Straight by the Rules by Michelle Scott is the third book in the Lilith Straight series, Lilith Straight might have a contract to act as the Devil's servant, however she still has her conscience, This makes life just a little bit tricky in Hell, as you might imagine, When your sister actually belongs in Heaven, the hot man in your life has his own devilish agenda and the rest of your family wont stop meddling in your unfinished business life is very complicated!
Straight by the Rules is the third book in this series, and while I have not read the previous books and know I missed a great deal of set up and world building, I was able to catch up to speed quickly.
Although I will say that I am eager to go back and read the first two book, Lilith is stuck in a contract to follow instructions and tempt particular people at certain times, She is still trying to figure out how to get out of her contract, but is afraid to go too far from the letter of the rules and put her daughter and extended family at risk.
Life is even more complicated because her almost boyfriend is also in the service of the devil, and has been at it much longer.
Then there is her friend, who she has enthralled, the niece that lives with her, and the challenge of fulfilling her contract while not betraying her own value or those that believe in her.
I liked her methods, her outlook, and her nature, The story had me hooked, even without knowing just how we all got here, Even the secondary characters made themselves known, and interesting to me,
Straight by the Rules is a quick paced, fun urban fantasy, I enjoyed the characters, and getting to know them, I will be going back to read the first two books, and am looking forwards to seeing where the fourth book will take me as well.
Lilith Straight is still living under the curse one of her earlier ancestors brought upon the female members of her line, She hates her job as a succubus, but the contract is binding for all eternity, It isnt too bad with her almost boyfriend and her human extended family keeping her life interesting, fun, and enjoyable, But, Lilith believes she can break the contract, and bring an end to the curse forever, She has to, or her current child might pay the priceor the future one Hell wants her to conceive as part of her contract.
As Ive stated in the past, and probably will again in the future, I have an aversion to starting a book in the middle of a series without having read the other ones.
I must start at the first one, However, I found the description on this book to be interesting and fun, Besides, if the author does a good job, the reader wont feel too confused, First the good things: Immediately, I was drawn into the story, felt mostly like I hadnt missed anything, and had a good grasp of the characters.
The book was wellwritten, entertaining, and fun, It was mostly so engaging I didnt want to put it down, and was actually surprised when I realized how close I was to the end.
Now the bad things of which there is only a couple: I stated above that I didnt feel like I had missed much by not having read the first ones.
The exception to that was the character Ariel, I still didnt quite know how she had entered the picture until I read reviews and descriptions of the first book, That had a tendency to throw me out of the book at times, Also, this book did seem a little lacking in a substantial plot, However, these two “bad” things are very inconsequential, This book was exactly what it was supposed to be: a wonderful, fun, quick read, I am going to go out and get the others in the series, I really, really highly recommend everyone who likes these types of books to do the same, This book/series is well worth it!

Publisher Description: Im Lilith Straight, the Devils servant, Youd think that it would be straightforward, wouldnt you Carry out the Devils work, thats all: wreak havoc and cause carnage on Earth
: “zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzWha, oh yeah”.
This novel tries too hard to be witty, funny, sarcastic and cute yet just cant seem to pull it off, The characters are one dimensional and rely on patterned roles to entertain, There is nothing unique about them, Ariel, that cute little scamp, likes henna tattoos, Gothware and French fries with mayo and Tommy, Lilith, a succubus with a heart of gold who is constantly rolling her eyes, has a list of todos that include destroying Helen and getting out of her contractual obligations.
Her hot incubus manlove whom she has not hooked up with yet aftermonthsodd for a single mother succubus always has a sparkle, twinkle, smolder or something in his eyes.
Fug.
Everything is about Lilith which leaves the story line more than flat and renders what could be wonderful world building into boring scene development.
While the writing is technically good I have a Masters!! the novel lacks in creative world building, The movement is almost nonexistent and was never utilized to develop the characters to their full potential,
Read this while being pestered by ayear old sociopath,
I have enjoyed the previous books in this series and was interested to see what the author would bring us next,
Lilith is still trying to fight against the establishment she finds herself working for, and trying to do everything she can to get out of her contract.
But this is a long standing contract, several generations have fought the same fight, What makes Lilith think she can be the one who manages to succeed
Lilith is a strong headed woman, she sometimes doesn't think enough about consequences before she goes ahead with her actions.
She is constantly trying to look after those she loves to the detriment, at times, of herself, She fights for what she believes in and it makes her a brilliant, and at times funny, character to read,
We see loads more of William, the hot succubi also contracted to do the bidding of the devil, He may be the 'bad' guy, but boy is he hot sounding! Gimme more!
There are a few secrets which only come out near the end of this book which sets up, I hope, the next bit of the story.
I can't wait to read more about it in the future,
A great addition to the series,
Many thanks to Netgalley and Carina for providing me with a copy in exchange for an honest review, .
