a weird and very interesting story, At first I wasn't totally into it and sadly I just didn't like Roger, He has a great life, with a great wife and kids, loves everything about his life and is turning, I wanted him to get run over by a car! I mean seriously, great I'm glad you're happy but I don't want to read about all that damn happiness!
And then the twist.
He wakes in the hospital and is trying to figure out what happened when WHAM! He looks at himself and realizes he's now a white guy! And not ayear old either but ayear old white guy.
. . what the hell Needless to say I was much more interested in the story at this point, It's kind of like a psychological thriller, He's trying to figure out what the hell is going on while everyone thinks he's nuts,
The downside is the thriller portion didn't get totally answered, The story was left at a place where you have to kind of answer your own questions, And it's almost as if everything he went through was for naught, which drives me crazy! But there are some interchanging plot lines that run through this and I think those plot lines are what really kept me wanting to know more but the ending just left me a little weird.
I loved it but I also hated it, I want to know more, I want Roger to know more!
The writing was definitely intriguing and although the plot left a little to be desired I found myself wanting to read because it was so interesting.
The plot, the characters were engaging, but the writing itself was phenomenal,
Into sci fi or thrillers You'll enjoy the twists this one has, I thought this book was a very good one with a very exciting plot, The ending was one which I did not see coming, The story in Life is But a Dream is phenomenal, The idea of reincarnation is fascinating and to incorporate it into a thriller was exciting! The story was spiritual, but with mystery and intrigue, It was very reminiscent ofMonkeys actually,
My main issue with the book is this The story is written in narration, meaning that you are able to witness the thoughts, feelings and actions of all the characters, but you don't feel connected to them.
As I read this book, I literally felt like I was watching an old movie from thes you know, with the deep male voice narrating the entire thing.
Like I said, the story was great, but the execution was not great, I received this book for free as part of Goodreads First Reads giveaways,
This review may contain spoilers,
This was a fairly unique book in that it combined time travel with reincarnation two plots that I haven't seen put together before,
The differences between Roger and Sydney were fairly interesting, more noticeable as the time passed, Roger's confusion over things in the future
was endearing and easy to empathise with,
I liked the characters and I liked Roger's relationships with the people in the future, They grew on me and I really liked them, even Cyrus, who I didn't especially like at first,
I did notice quite a few errors in the book not misspellings as such, but the wrong word used, 'Site' instead of 'sight' was one of those, There were also a few occasions where something was stated that wasn't known by the POV character, which was kind of confusing,
I didn't think there was much mystery in the book, I have to say, Everything was revealed in a block of speech towards the end, The book did succeed in keeping me reading, though, and I cared about what happened to the characters,
I'd probably be interested in reading another book by the same author, depending on the genre, It was definitely an interesting read with wellwritten characters that were easy to identify with, Read this book after seeing it recommended on another site, Couldn't put it down. Would like to read more of his books, I thought this was a story about time travel however was intrigued to realize it was about reincarnation, a different twist.
. . definitely a great read! I won a copy of this book from Goodreads,
The author, who seems like a nice guy, has said in response to a review on Amazon, com that editing problems were fixed in the most current version of this book, Unfortunately, I got an old copy, Some of my complaints might no longer apply to the new version,
The good: The premise of reincarnation was interesting and unique, The author seems extremely knowledgeable about viruses and history, The plot is convoluted and complex, and the pacing is leisurely, In the last quarter of the book I did care about what happened to the characters, The cover is good.
The notsogood, for me:
It took a long time for me to like the main character, Due to the distant, formal, passively worded narrative I never really cared about Jessica or some of the other characters,
My copy was so riddled with mistakes that if I weren't compelled to review it for Goodreads I wouldn't have finished reading it, I'm not extremely picky. Many of these goofs could have been fixed with a simple run through Microsoft Word's grammar checker or simply having an honest test reader, There was missing punctuation, incorrect words site for sight, you're for your, switched tenses from past to present and back, an info dump where a man told a story inside a flashback and spoke forunbroken pages, and a scene in the wrong spot one paragraph Roger and the shrink he's known a week are getting hotdogs in the park, the next he's kissing her at her doorstep, the next pragraph they're back in the park eating the hotdogs.
My overall opinion is tread lightly, If you're lucky enough to get an edited copy then it'll be a good read, Or if you don't care about the technical side of writing at all and just want story, go for it, For me, if I had paid for the copy I got in this poorly edited form, I'd have been angry, I thoroughly enjoyed this book, I bought it on impulse I don't usually read books, proffering to stick to newspapers and magazines, but I was fascinated by the premise, Once I started, I found myself eager to learn more about the protagonist and his circumstances and desperate to find out how the book would end, Although the book is technically science fiction, the storytelling feels of another genre think mystery/ thriller, Do buy a copy it's an exciting and compelling story and hugely satisfying read, .
