Cormac McCarthy was a sensual pagan woman from the Pacific Northwest, I imagine this is the kind if poetry he would aspire to write.
lovely heartfelt flowing sparse
Looking forward to seeing more from this poet, Hauntingly romantic and sensual "Benediction for a Black Swan" led me around the world to exotic streets, cities and countries, With its smooth rhythmic phrases its not surprising that Zollars was trained as a dancer as well as a writer, Her voluptuous rich language caught my breath many times as I read and the pauses, designated by spaces instead of commas, gave me a chance to recover before I moved on again.
This is a poetry collection I will keep in my bedside table to read over and over before falling to sleep in hopes of stimulating my dreams.
Mimi does not use punctuation in her poetry, leaving spaces to signify commas, and she does not use full stops / capital letters at all.
Being used to poetry with punctuation, I was not sure if I liked this as I found myself rereading some lines, . . see below. 'archeologists travelers writers drink champagne beneath desert the best stories like light tattoos on skin the excessive love of anything how dangerous it is he remembers her naked clothes.
. . ' Despite the lack of punctuation, as you can see Mimi's writing is awash with wanderlust, riddled with mystery and conjures a beautiful spectrum of emotions.
It's been a while since I've read a poetry collection where each poem is unique and yet so clearly bears the stamp of the poet.
I recommend this collection to anyone, whether you are new to or regularly read poetry, Not one who usually reads poetry, they have to really strike me for me to consider, When I was younger I read The Rime of the Ancient Mariner and was immediately taken with the beauty of expression, The same can be said for every poem in Benediction for a Black Swan, Each poem is beautifully crafted, filled with an emotional depth and clarity that drew me in, The level of expression and the clever use of language filled me with awe, Whether you are into poetry or not, this book is more than worth a read, Stunning. In Benediction for a Black Swan, Mimi Zollars explores the topics of childhood, children, marriage and divorce, alcoholism, and the sensual world in a series of edgy, seductive, irreverent, and ethereal poems.
Incorporating elements of magical realism, Zollars sexy, darkly beautiful works embrace the miraculous as ordinary and turn the ordinary into the extraordinary, " I dont think Ive ever read a book of poetry from beginning to end in one sitting, but that is exactly what happened when I picked up Mimi Zollars Benediction for a Black Swan.
Then I went back over the following weeks and savored the exotic vignettes of times, places and characters, A wonderful gardener and architect of words and print on the page, Zollars gives us poems of love and loss, an exquisite appeal to every sense, and a dancers taut creation of movement and scene, expressive of beauty within.
This lovely, often disturbing collection resonates deeply even the placement of the words across the white pages is poetry, Each poem is well constructed and controlled while remaining honest, insightful, and unpretentious, The title poem is at once lush and crushingly stark, My favorite is The Beautiful Bridge Did Fall, and Bleeding Edge is the perfect ending, Read slowly, savor, repeat. sitelink post a
