of the Sea Dragon A review of the novel Moonfin
“In still moments by the sea life seems largedrawn and simple.
It is there we can see into ourselves, ” Rolf Edberg
Author L, L. Minties Moonfin: Through the Watery Door is a fantasy adventure that takes place underwater, Its a magical place where mythical sea creatures rule supreme, Lizzy is ayear old girl making the most of her summer break when one day she discovers that shes able to communicate with marine creatures.
This discovery sends her on an adventure of a lifetime where she not only makes some new friends but also grows up as a person.
In many ways its a simple coming of age story with some finely crafted fantasy elements thrown in.
And its these fantasy elements that maintain a chokehold on your interest levels throughout the book,
Elizabeth Lou aka Lizzy always had a strong bond with the sea and its marine life, her parents sealife centric career and job instilling a deep knowledge and fascination in her from early childhood.
But its much later on that shes made aware of her special lineage and status in the new order of things.
Lizzy is highly likeable and its not just kids but adults also will relate with her personal journey,
Minties imagination is vivid and her characters come alive in this beautiful alternate world she has created.
Another aspect that deserves praise is the fine editing found in the book,
A compelling lead character and a setting that you would like to revisit are more than enough reasons to wait for the next adventure in this series.
It had a good basic story and I liked the characters, but so many weird things happened, The author added this and it was just too much.
It got really confusing. Pretty cover, though. At first she notices something unusual about the fish swimming around in their tanks in the little aquariumthey seem to be growing very old, very quickly, and Lizzy Grape can tell they are weeping by some sixth sense she mysteriously possesses.
Stranger still is her ability to breathe underwater with a conch shell and the conversation she has with an octopus named Iddo who tells her remember the Way to the Deep.
Soonyearold Lizzy is plunged into the world of the Waterpeople, keepers and protectors of the sea, and the only connection to her magical past.
They
send Lizzy and her friends on an urgent mission to find a frightening treasure hidden beneath the darkly enchanted Otter Island.
. . a place of hidden snares, surprising doorways, and unexpected beings from other realms,
