Get Filipino Values And Our Christian Faith Crafted By Evelyn Miranda-Feliciano Presented As Document
helpful comparison of Christianity and Filipino culture, The author does a great job of drawing out distinct Filipino characteristics and then examines them in light of what Christ taught, Very helpful for anyone trying to better understand Filipino culture and how to contextualize the gospel in a meaningful way, I struggled to read this because honestly, I am not the target audience for this book, I do not know enough Tagalog for the terminology she uses to make much sense to me and so I often felt I was only getting half the point.
Perhaps I would gain more from it if I revisit it in a couple years when I have more understanding of the language and culture, That being said, I appreciated the
candor with which she wrote about difficult issues facing Christians Filipinos, some of which are also faced by American Christians her chapter on nationalism was excellent!.
It was saturated in Scripture and I kept thinking throughout my reading that she was just so wise and clear in her thinking and writing, I found her final chapter/appendix, in which she wrote about how to make the Christian faith more Filipino, rather than shaped by things adopted by foreign influences, to be really really good.
It made me uncomfortable, but in a really helpful and important way, This was extremely thought provoking and I'm glad I spent time pushing through the more difficult parts, First published in, this book has become a landmark book in Filipino Evangelical Christian literature, It has often been quoted in other books, essays and scholarly journals and is one of the primary resource materials on living Biblically as a Filipino,
In this book, Evelyn MirandaFeliciano challenges Filipino Christians to reflect and evaluate certain culturallyaccepted Filipino values and practices, Deep and hardhitting, her questions are as relevant today as when she first asked them,
What is the value of pakikisama in our new life in Christ
How far should our utang na loob extend
What is the difference between bahala na and the Christian concept of God's will
How truly honest can a Christian be in a culture that has accepted lusot, lakad and lagay.
