read this book when I wasyears old and it was unforgettable,years later I still remember this book, It's a mustread. Good book with great amount of detailing done on the pre and post world war II times, I first saw the movie based on this book, starring Patrick McGoohan and Lee Remick, on television while in college, I remember that there was a scene involving advertising auditions that made me cry auditions are always traumatic, if filmed accurately, That has little to do with the book, however, which is a popularized account of the German “Lebensborn” program essentially the positive side of Nazi eugenics where the Holocaust was the negative side.
The purpose was to increase the amount of good German blood and to purify the race by breeding the best genetic material, This was done in a variety of ways, One was to encourage unmarried German women to give birth by setting up nursing homes they could go to without public shame in order to bear their children and possibly give them up for adoption.
These houses were also reputed to serve as houses of illrepute for SS officers, to encourage them to impregnate as many women as possible.
Lebensborn also was implicated in the kidnapping of thousands of children from occupied countries for adoption by “good German families,” getting them out of the “impure” environments they had been born into.


The book documents these elements of the Third Reich with varying degrees of success, in part because the authors found many roadblocks in the way of getting accurate information.
Many of the children who were products or victims of this system were still living, and their parents wanted to protect them from any shame regarding their births.
Possibly, some adoptive parents were still hiding kidnapped children from their birth parents for fear that they could be deported to Warsaw Pact nations.
In general, German law makes getting documents regarding living persons very difficult, so that they had to rely on a lot of interviews and court cases.
Some of the book is sensationalistic, given the subject material and imperfect evidence the authors were working with

I dont know whether any academic historian has since done work on the Lebensborn however, so this may be the best text available to most lay readers.

Methods included careful selection of those "worthy" to reproduce, elimination or sterilzation of those deemed undesirable, and kidnapping within conqured territories of child candidates who then were subjected to the same ruthless selection criteria and process.
