Its fun to discover something new or read a birdrelated poem before I gaze out the window at my bird feeder, Im going to have to track down some of the movies in the “birds on screen” list, This is a stunningly beautiful book, full of information, stories, poems, and art, It is one to be treasured and kept handy for frequent visits, As I am writing this, an owl is calling outside, . . coincidence I think not. Enjoying the birds with whom we share our world, This is a beautifully illustrated book presented by National Geographic and written by Jane Yolen and members of her family, They have been active birders all their lives so are more than adequately prepared for such a work,
I found the information excellent, with a good range in the various chapters even a few myths and legends, The book has a number of poems written specially for it, by the authors, and I'm sad to say that I found them mediocre.
Wow! What a fabulous book, I was indifferent to the poetry but the photographs, illustrations, and short stories are all wonderful, There is SO MUCH information here and yet its still fairly browsable, This is definitely a book for older kids, middle school or teens, I really enjoyed it and am excited to try some of the feeder and birdhouse ideas once spring finally comes back, An awesome collection of information, photographs, poetry, stories, history, pop culture, and so much more, Nature lovers will devour this book, As a child who grew up with parents who loved birds, I found myself completely wrapped up in this book, We had multiple bird feeders on our farm including those specifically for goldfinches, hummingbirds, orioles, and then regular feeders, That love of birds has carried on into our family as well, We keep our feeders stocked all year and enjoy the various birds that visit it, We dont get the variety that my parents get out in the country, but we get a surprise visit once in a while from a bird we havent seen at our feeder before.
Author Jane Yolen has collaborated with her three adult children to write the stories of birds, You can tell they have all grown up with a great appreciation for birds, The poems written by Yolen and her daughter were descriptive and lovely, Obviously, the photography is vivid and beautiful, showcasing the beauty of birds and what makes them unique,
I learned so much about birds reading this book and I thought I knew a lot already, I had no idea that birds are the only living creatures that have feathers, I knew the beaks on various birds were different, but I didnt realize how different and specific their beaks are to make it easier for them to eat.
I loved reading about all the state birds and what makes them unique,
Since birds are common in folk tales, there are several included at the end of the book, Ive always loved folk tales, especially ones that tell “why” a bird looks are does something, The story of “Why the Robins Breast is Red” was one I hadnt heard before and its one Ill remember next spring when the first robin lands in our yard.
The end of the book included ways to get connected to organizations that support birds, Ive obviously heard of the Audubon society but never really knew what the organization did, It also shared information on apps I had no idea there were apps for birding which I downloaded immediately,
Even though I loved this book, I think kids will too, The information shared is definitely written for kids, but everyone in the family will enjoy reading and looking at the pictures, This is a coffee table book size and is quite heavy, Its definitely a book sure to become a cherished resource, What a fantastic book about birds, I heard about this nonfiction book from a blog I follow, so I picked it up from the library, The illustrations inside are beautiful and most of the them are lifelike, The book is filled with information that will please most bird enthusiast and I feel that this book would look beautiful on a
coffee table even though it is a labeled a childs nonfiction book.
The book begins with a detailed table of contents for those who are searching for specifics, The categories range from birds in stories and art, bird characteristics, bird records, saving the birds, birds in your yard, state birds U.
S. and birdsongs, just to name a few, I didnt read everything in this book as there is a lot to read but what I did read was educational and interesting.
There is great information on each page and I wish I had the memory to remember everything that I had read, I did read the article on birdsongs and I learned a great deal on how birds sing, It was fascinating to learn how birds learn their songs and I also learned that a whole flock of birds will have the same songs but also that smaller groups within these same birds, will create their own songs based on where they live.
As I looked over the illustrations, most of them had text boxes of interesting facts, I liked that the birds on the pages were labeled so I could tell exactly what type of bird I was looking at and didnt have to go hunting for it.
The illustrations are lifelike and most of the illustrations take up the majority of the page, Looking at the Vervain Hummingbird, she looks big as she feeds her babies on the page but as I read the textbox, I realize that her nest is half the size of a walnut shell and it is the smallest nest of all birds.
By looking at this illustration, I would have never known that, There are a few illustrations that are drawings in this book, These drawings are very detailed and beautiful, I liked the information and illustrations about the birds in my own yard, I learned about seeds, bird baths, and about which houses are best for which birds, These werent complicated, drawnout explanations but good directions with clear photos,
A fantastic book that I highly recommend, A book that has made its way into my shopping chart,

The arithmetic of eggs
is hard to unscramble,
Laying, lying,
a tangle, a bramble,
Plus or minus,
one on one
Zygotes, passion,
done, undone
Two in the nest
Quite round.
Ovate
Waiting their very uncertain fate,
Before uncurling,
beak or leg,
If there's a breakin, . .
