Acquire Stitchcraft: An Embroidery Book Of Simple Stitches And Peculiar Patterns Developed By Gayla Partridge Shown In Edition

currently got this from the library, but I'm thinking I need to order my own copy,

Note: this is not a beginner embroidery book, I would put this as intermediate, The stitches she uses are fairly common ones, but you're expected to figure out how to do the designs based on an outline and pretty minimal instructions.
Which I'm fine with because that's about where I'm at right now,

What I love most about this is the inspiration for me, If you want spooky gothic embroidery designs this is your book, I envision having a bunch of these that I pull out and surreptitiously put in place of "normal" wall decor for October,

Some of them of course could easily be adapted to more conventional stylings too, if done on a different color background, like the Palmistry Samplers for example.

Would highly recommend to anybody else who wants an embroidery book that doesn't feature stitching ducklings on baby bibs, Not that there's anything wrong with duckling baby bibs if that's what you're into, That's just not my interest right now, One of the most beautiful embroidery books have seen in recent years, I borrowed my copy from the library and I love it so much I plan to purchase my own copy, Beautifully done. The subtitle says it all, Surface embroidery, using a variety of stitches, Peculiar patterns, indeed. I was expecting goth girl chic and I got dissection occultism, There's some overlap there for sure, but this book
Acquire Stitchcraft: An Embroidery Book Of Simple Stitches And Peculiar Patterns Developed By Gayla Partridge Shown In Edition
has some truly gross and weird things, It's also not a how to guide with stitches or techniques, Rather, it's a set of patterns, with stitch suggestions,
This book would be great resource if you want to do some anatomical work, There are several more whimsical patterns that I will be tracing, but other than that, this didn't quite hit the mark,
Certainly a good source of information with beautiful pictures, This book is probably best for people who are really averse to some of the sickly sweet/hyper frilly/kitschy embroidery designs out there, Well first off I only saw the title that said Stitchcraft and was under the impression from where I got the book it would have different kinds of stitching.
There is no cross stitch and isembroidery, That however is not why I marked it down since it was my mistake, It's back to the title stitchcraft which makes you think of witchcraft spooky and witchy, And yes you do get a small bit of this here, but I would also consider it to having a bit of a science look too.
There are a lot of innards and dissection patterns, There are a few patterns that would fall under witchy or spooky, It's just too much inside the human and animal body for me, Awesome Embroidery

Awesome Embroidery inspired me to brain storm for a Day of the dead project, Great reference guide explains the stitches,
Beautiful but very strange, Not one I would revisit, I picked this up because of the photographs, as a kind of follwoup to Threads of Life as it illustrates the ToL author's points about embroidery as art rather than "simple" craft.
Because that was my focus, I can't speak to the quality of instructions for each project, They seem, at least to me who is a nonsewer, rather loose instructions that assume one has some needle experience under their belt, And I don't see myself particularly drawn to the idea of embroidering detailed pictures of frog dissections, Just doesn't fit with my decorating style,

In spite of all that, I love what the author does here, and I'd happily spend a good chuck of time looking at her work in a gallery or show.
This is far more interesting than the usual hearts and doves samplers and those sophomoric "No fucks to give" embellished with ribbons and flowers that are everywhere.
There's a far more subtle sense of humor at play here, Also Kudos to whoever framed the works and photographed the book, Highly inspirational but not a step by step “how to”, Youll need to be creative and willing to learn the stitches from an outside source, I highly recommend The Spruce Crafts as one free resource for learning stitches but there are many,
I picked up this book because I have an interest in recreating vintage surgical plates and dissection diagrams as embroidery projects, So I was thrilled to find a book that might inspire, and help me understand the right way to go about the project,
As a plus, the photography is so gorgeous this could make a unique and artistic coffee table book even for those not interested in learning to embroider.
Not my style of embroidery but I still enjoy the detailed instructions, the pictures, the patterns and the love that was put into this book.
Reading this felt like going to an exhibit and it was a wonderful experience, Beautiful book with really cool designs and art more of a coffee table book for inspiration rather than an educational crafting book for example, the basic stitches used aren't described or shown and the colors of the floss are not referenced anywhere.
Beautiful but difficult emphasis on cult designs, I love this book! it inspired me to start embroidering, I had no experience before and started with the patterns in this book, Visually inspiring! Especially love the macro shots of the finished projects, This is definitely in the category of an ART book and not at all a HOWTO, She provides very little guidance on the stitches used and doesnt cover technique or supplies or any of that, Which is a little bit of a bummer but also, doesnt detract from the amazing work, For more howto and what and why you cant do better than Rebecca Ringquist on Creative Bug available for free through many library systemsor the book Mystical Stitches by Christy Johnson.
Also just tons of YouTubers out there sharing their skills and knowledge TheStitchery!!! Gorgeous photographs of swoonworthy embroidery with slightly macabre subjects: anatomy dissections, butcher's charts, etc.
It's not a Here'saPatternMakeOneJustLikeMine book rather the author/artist provides a general outline template, a chart of the stitches she used, and tells you to make it your own.
I got this from my library, but will be buying a copy for my own library!
Love the pieces in this book, so inspiring.
Beautiful art. I was left hyper salivating, I just arrived at the embroidery world and I'm anxious to get to the level this Stitchcraft's art requires, It is by no means a step by step book, Still inspiring. This embroidery book was right up my alley! Gorgeous embroidery design, and I loved the patterns!,Stars for me. I was really only interested in the dissected frog pattern as my own frog dissection was my favorite school experience legit went back during lunch to dissect another for extra credit it was so interesting!.
But I'm assuming the book is for experts only because there are no patterns supplied There are just line outlines not even on grids, a list of the stitches you'll use, and verbal explanations.
Maybe this teaching method is more common than I think but I didn't find it particularly helpful,
Love it!

This is one of my favorite craft books, She gives you patterns for her designs, yet the designs encourage you to do your own thing, The theme of her work is dark, yet tasteful, She includes her basic stitches that she used with the patterns, yet there is no reason to be held to these, You can use whatever you want to practice, at the moment, I really wish Gayla would do another book! Absolutely love this one! Love this book,
First it's not your normal step by step how to book, it has little to no instructions for doing stitching,
It has fantastic images of finished projects to inspire along with the patterns for the projects,
It's great if your looking for a pattern but want to do your own thing, Step inside the enchanted world of arcane imagery and rich esoteric symbolism in this deeply imaginative embroidery art book!
