heard nothing but incredible things about this memoirpowerful, emotional, deeply moving, insightful, Sweet and loving, this nonfictional work chronicles a families journey through tragedy, difficult decisionmaking and then rebuilding after the loss of a cherished member.
We greatly enjoyed hearing the lessons and personal stories recounted by local Milwaukee author, Susan Angel Miller, Susan Miller's honest memoir about how losing her beloved eldest daughter affected her family is a portrait of courage and resilience in the face of unimaginable pain.
The Millers' selfless decision, in the first moments of shock, to donate Laura's organs gave them some rationale for this tragedy and motivated them to actively advocate for organ donation.
But the road from grief to growth has been far from smooth, and Susan's openness about the stops along the wayincluding going back to routine, family relationships, therapy topics, her own illness ironically similar to her daughter's, and "aha" resourcesfoster insight and inspiration that others will find helpful.
Plus, Susan's intelligence and skill combine for a beautifully written read, Favorite Quote “All life experiences are relative, Situations can always be worse, and they can always be better, Comparing trauma, healing, or even the pace and extent of our own recovery to anyone elses dishonors our humanity and ignores our wonderfully imperfect individuality.
Trauma and loss are deeply personal, as is our reaction to them, but we can intentionally choose to welcome the happiness we still have, even in our most dismal moments.
" Susan Angel Miller shares her family's poignant story with tremendous vulnerability and personality, Laura comes to life with every page I feel like I know her, and reading Permission to Thrive makes me wish that I did.
This book is a must read for anyone experiencing grief or comforting those grieving, My family and I have learned to live in the paradox of lifes negatives and positives: despair and triumph, depression and motivation, heartsickness and healing, devastation and resilience.
For anybody who worries about what the future holdsand that seems to be just about everybodythe same can be true,
Intensely personal and heartfelt, Susan Angel Millers book begins with the sudden loss of her fourteen year old daughter, Laura, from a brain tumor, and touches on her and her familys decision to donate Lauras organs, as well as managing the trauma and aftermath of the emergence of an eerily similar illness to her late daughter.
I already knew the main details of Laura's story going into Permission to Thrive , but I found myself overcome with emotion when I listened to the pain in Miller's voice, talking about what Laura was like, and the details of the funeral, and how Miller learned to move on, gave herself permission to thrive, while keeping Laura close to her heart.
Despite this being such a personal story, Miller's handling of the universal themes of death and illness and trauma and her indepth look at posttraumatic growth will appeal to anyone who has experienced tragedy, loss, or seemingly insurmountable obstacles.
Miller's story has taught me that there is no roadmap to grief, no one easy way forward that all lifes events change us, whether we want them to or not.
That 'comparing trauma dishonors our humanity and our wonderfully imperfect individuality' that we can intentionally choose to welcome the happiness that we still have.
By the end of the novel, all readers will be smiling through their tears I myself have not had the pleasure of reading a book or listening to an audiobook so raw, so powerful, so moving, in a long, long time.
