was a really powerful memoir, Her method of expression is beautiful, and the recount of her traumatic experiences is poetic and explains far more than I thought could be possible about the pain she felt.
I have never experienced anything close to what she has, but after reading her book, I feel like I can begin to comprehend her experience.
It was absolutely worth reading and worth the time it took to read and think about the book, She is a talented writer, and I hope she writes more,
A sad sad book about a woman who lived through a childhood of incestuous sexual abuse, Since she buried those memories deep down as soon as they happened, the horrifying truth didn't come out until much later.
P. S. This is a challenging read that moves at its own pace, which can make it a difficult book to get through.
Always full of respect for survivors that put their stories so coherently and beautifully into words and put it out there for the world to read.
However, there's a number of ideas about therapy that are being transported in the book, like "you must remember everything in order to heal" wrong, and dangerous, "you must make corrective reparenting experiences with your therapist" somewhat problematic and "you must forgive to find peace" wrong, and dangerous that I disagree with.
Catherine McCall appeared to have all an
American girl could want: welltodo cosmopolitan parents, a private education, a strong faith foundation even two baby grand pianos at her fingertips.
But beneath this perfect façade, her family hid a horrific secret, No one could have guessed there was an actual torture chamber in the basement ofMontgomery Place, or that McCall was being raped repeatedly by her father.
And by the age of eighteen, she didnt know either she had repressed every memory of abuse, Twenty years later, married and with children of her own, McCall's memories began to return,
When the Piano Stops is McCall's revealing memoir detailing the abuse she suffered at the hands of her mentally ill father and her remarkable recovery as an adult.
Now a highly successful family therapist, her ability to overcome the dark years of childhood is an inspiration to those who have been sexually abused.
Her prose is lucid, with early events narrated from the perspective of a child, giving her story a stark authenticity and immediacy.
A true survivor memoir, When the Piano Stops is poised to change the face of literature on the topic of sexual abuse.
This book gives good insight into what it's like to be sexually abused and what recovery from that abuse looks like.
