Non avevo mai fatto caso all'anno in cui lessi l'opera di Runciman, esattamenteanni dopo la presa di Gerusalemme.
Assicuro che fu del tutto casuale, L'opera, in due volumi, narra e analizza l'epopea delle crociate, dalla prima ondata composta da popolani che miseramente fu schiacciata dai turchi a Nicea, a quella più fortunata che nelportò l'apocalisse su Gerusalemme, fino alle ultime crociate del XV, promosse dai papi ma mai decollate, compresa quella che poco onorevolmente si sciolse nel porto di Ancona nel, nella vana attesa di un trasporto per Outremer.
Trattata con rigore storico, oggettività e grande distacco Runciman non tifa per nessuno, né tanto meno esecra l'avventura crociata viene inquadrata nel suo tempo o meglio nei vari tempi che le restituisce il significato e la valenza emotiva.

Sepolcro, protezione dei pellegrini, aiuto e salvezza al morente impero bizantino ma anche invasione predonesca e sanguinosa di piccoli emirati siro palestinesi pacifici e dediti al commercio i musulmani siro palestinesi non capivano il perché di tanta violenza sulle loro persone e beni razzie e avventure banditesche a spese di popolazioni spesso inermi nascita di piccoli stati feudali aggressivi fin sulle frontiere del Kurdistan, ma anche di una cultura europea che si nutriva avidamente della ricchezza intellettuale e artistica dell'Oriente islamico e non.
Molto ben fatti i ritratti dei protagonisti di entrambe le parti belle risaltano le figure di Nur Din e Saladino, gran signori raffinati, generosi e cavallereschi, di fronte ai quali Riccardo Cuor di Leone amp C.
fanno la figura degli zoticoni violenti, spergiuri e bramosi di preda,
Lettura impegnativa per la gran mole delle pagine scorrevole e sempre affascinante la scrittura e la narrazione.
Un gran bel libro.

Yazarı İstanbul'un fethine dair enfes kitabından hatırlıyorum, bu da motivasyonumu arttıran diğer faktördü.

Öncelikle kitabın dili o kadar karışık, isimleri olayları takip etmek o kadar zor ki, benim gibi amatörler için değil sanki bu.
Bendeki basımda kullanılan eski kelimelere olan yabancılık da kavramayı zorlaştırıyor maalesef.

Questo è il caso del nostro caro Runciman, che guarda caso porta un nome degno di un paladino di Carlo Magno o uno scudiero di Orlando.
Nonostante sia un bel supermattone di più di
mille pagine la lettura è avvincente e quasi mai noiosa: omicidio, incesto, lebbra, guerre, massacri indiscriminati di popolazione civile inerme, tradimenti, capricci, donne e uomini bramosi di potere ma incapaci di gestirlo, intolleranza etnica e religiosa.

A bit outdated, but an excellent piece for a midto beginnerlevel history of the Crusades, This threevolume set is an exemplary history, full of the incident and hundreds thousands of persons all carefully indexed who comprise the events of two and half centuries.
Sir Steven is not a "thesis" historian, although he does not hesitate to make final conclusions of great insight and soundness.
His strength lies in his meticulous detail and objectivity, recounting the errors and virtues of all the players, on all sides, with great wisdom and impartiality.
He shows that the Crusades were, to use his word, an epic fiasco, that set out to secure the safety of Eastern Christendom, and ended up destroying it yet he also shows how the Crusades were an initiator of the Italian Renaissance, by driving out the humanists and scholars who could not thrive in an Islamic world whose rigid intolerance was amplified by the Crusading movement.
Without ever being vitriolic, he spares no one: While the Crusaders were stubborn bigots who refused to learn from past strategic errors, the Moslems were riven by internecine powercontests that nearly sunk them, and the Mongols efficiently, ruthlessely built an empire based on Genghis Khan's organizational brilliance and policy of implacable massacre.
Stylistically, the books are a remarkable crossroads of popular appeal, engaging writing and mindbogglingly comprehensive scholarship, detailed research and narrative account.
Narrative three volume history of crusades to the Holy Land and the Crusader Kingdoms well largely the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem.
It's easy to read, approachable and at first highly detailed, However the author gets noticeably tired of the subject and lacking in empathy by the third volume, doesn't really engage critically with the source material and, to put it crudely, misses out a lot of the good stuff.
The absolute worst point is the final summing up chapter in the third volume which, implicitly, shows Runciman believing that history is like accountancy but with the audit of the account expressed in words rather than numbers.
Runciman is convinced that the crusades made a loss and were therefore a bad thing or possibly the other way round,, besides which telling us that he thinks the crusades where a bad thing while offering some insight into Runciman, misses the point , which is it tells us nothing of the motivations, or values of the participants what did crusading or occasionally kingdom building mean to them Runciman's knowledge and interest in Byzantine History isn't brought to bear either giving the impression that for him the two polities existed in silos despite being round the coast from each other, and at various points interacting.
It's rather odd.
Over time I have drifted further away from this book and wouldn't recommend it, The series is at its strongest in its blow by blow account of the first crusade which makes up the whole of the first volume.
This is readable, fun but probably now unhelpful on the background to the first crusade, I got the set for some kind of attractive price from one of those book clubs that used to exist before the internet came along.
I feel obliged to mention that there is no where near enough space given over to Reynald of Châtillon the elephant of Christ , or Saladin .
Or the raucous wedding celebrations featuring people dressed as monks and nuns simulating sexual acts Long before the reader gets that far it is plain that Runciman wanted to be somewhere else where he was unlikely to bump into knights Templar or Hospitaller.
