One bonus is the maps, In the front there is one of Lake Ernestamke, which is fictional, but in the back is a map of real lakes with legendary monsters, and the compass has a nod to old maps.

I purchased this book, This is a cute story about the new kid at school who is trying to find a way to fit in, The kid in this case just happens to be a sea monster, The story is one that many children can relate to and told in this way, children can empathize but still be entertained, The illustrations are fun and colorful and the narrative is humorous, We enjoyed reading this story together, I wish I could live in Kate Messner's pocket for a year and pick up her whimsy and joyful view of the world, Her books make me happy, Illustrator Andy Rash includes clever details like the homage to Jaws and fanciful end paper maps, It's Ernest's first day, but he's having a little trouble making friends, "It felt like everybody was already part of a group, " Plus, he's bigger than everyone else and that seems to cause some problems, as

It is Sea Monster's first day at school and his mother gives him the advice to use his imagination to help him fit in, It's not easy, because many of the other sea creatures are afraid of him, have their own groups, and some even bully him, calling him names and teasing him.
But eventually he does find a clever way to fit in, using his imagination, just as his mom suggested, This is an excellent book to start the new school year off with! Sea Monster is going to school for his very first day and he struggles with things that many students do like fitting in, making friends, etc.
He ends up being just fine at school and lets the reader know that he's ready for another day at school! Very clever exploration of first day of school.

There comes a time in every Sea Monsters life when he must go away from home to learn all about the world and attend school, For Ernest its his very first time ever going to school and hes filled with feelings of excitement and trepidation, but with the urgings of his mother hes off and ready to do his best.
Doing as his mother taught him he introduces himself to everyone he meets, but quickly learns that it sometimes takes a bit of time to find just the right friends.
With a little bit of time and creativity Ernest is off to great adventures, wonderful friendships and of course, lots of learning,
Sea Monsters First Day by Kate Messner was an adorable picture book, Not only was it educational and encouraging, but it was perfect for my son who is going to be starting school in the next couple of months, As this poor sea monster searches for new friends I could see the Turkeybird searching with him and hoping hed quickly find them, Ernest is polite and always introduces himself, something that the my son is often weary of doing and so it was wonderful to be able to share with him the positive outcome of being outgoing.
Along the way you are able to see how Kate Messner incorporates little tidbits of knowledge through witty dialogue and situations that children can relate to.

the learning situations are found within a joke from one of the characters such as this
