books was so intriguing, It had everything I look for in a good fantasy series magic, mystery, adventure, and more magic! It was also beautifully written.
One of my favorite aspects of reading is getting absorbed in a book so fully that I feel as if I'm watching a movie in my mind, and this one was easy to picture.
The relationship between Runa, Cathal, Belwyn, and Mellypip plus the extended family of friends like Caliste was very welldone.
I love, love, LOVE the idea of incorporating the familiars so heavily into the plot, In many ways Belwyn and Mellypip were my favorite characters, It's a toss up on which familiar was my favorite I want a Mellypip of my own because he just sounds so cute and cuddlywho wouldn't want to have an adorable and cuddly little guy like him around after reading this book! Belwyn's sarcasm though.
. . that was a hoot! I know, I know very punny I did thoroughly enjoy how sarcastic he was though! The last time I enjoyed a Gate of Souls's depiction of familiars was Pullman's Golden Compass series, but I honestly think I enjoyed this depiction better.
They weren't born of dust and automatically bondedthey had to work on their relationship and choose one another.
So much more realistic!
I did get a little confused when it came to all the baddies.
Because some of them sort of filtered in and out less frequently leading up to the end of the book, I had trouble remembering who was who, and also felt like I wasn't able to picture their familiars as well.
Maybe I just didn't want to though, . . I was too attached to Team Runa/Cathal, I love it when I can find a good series to get into, and I can't wait to start in on the next book of this series.
