never having read much British literature, I wasn't exactly sure what I was in for, After reading it, I have to admit that I loved this book!
I think my favorite part of the book was the musical lyrics woven very skillfully into the plot.
Each song moved the plot along nicely, and accented what Jake was trying to say in the text, The lyrics added another dimension to the emotion in the book, and in fact, seemed to say what Jake himself couldn't in the narrative, At times, I felt choked up after reading Jake's monologue and corresponding song lyrics, The fact that Jake is a singer/songwriter is perfect and makes the lyrics add that touch of authenticity and emotion that is very satisfying and at times, poignant.
The humor was understated and very British but I liked the wry, selfdeprecating feel to the book, I also enjoyed the quite dysfunctional relationships between all of the members of Jake's world, At times, the dynamic between the friends and family felt very Shaun of the Dead, sans zombies,
At times, I did lose sympathy for the main character due to some of his actions, but it was hard to stay mad at him, He seemed to be a man to whom life will do what it wants, and he can either hang on for the ride or be trampled on the way down.
The ending was very satisfying and just what I wanted it to be, The bombshell dropped in the last few chapters was great, and I love the underhanded deed that turns out to be a great event for Jake, That's all I'm going to say, however, because to tell you more would be to give the ending away,
All in all, I would recommend this book to anyone who does one thing and dreams of being another, Dreams do come true, and Jake is a testament to those of us who live the daily grind while longing to be following our heart's desires, Jake Pembleton is a singersongwriter who once killed
a man, which still plays on his conscience,
Now he is in real trouble, Ever since returning home to his wife and kids to find his suitcases parked outside his front door, Jake has been holed up in that wild and lawless part of his city known as The Avenues with a springy nineteen year old groupie who is so sexy that she nearly gives him a heart attack each time she steps out of the shower.
Jakes only hopes are that his wifes new boyfriend will keep her sane, and that he will never meet his suburbiadwelling parentsinlaw again,
Beyond that, he just sits there clutching his guitar, writing his songs, loving his girl, and praying for better days and relief from a day job he is too ashamed of to talk about.
My :
“Just like El Cids Bloomers” caught me unprepared, I guess I was expecting something different, . what I am not sure, having read other works by this author I should have known better than to have any expectations of any kind other than knowing I was in for a treat.
Author Tim Roux didnt disappoint me, this book is a fast paced and quirky glimpse into the world of music, love and life in Hull,
Dont go looking for “sex drugs and rock and roll” This book is far too good to be lumped in a genre like that,
The world of Jake Pembleton revolves around Hull, It is set in real places and because it is everyone can identify with it and the very real characters that Roux has peopled this with,
Take Jakeand a few characters wish you would Jake is an average guy with above average talenthe is a singer songwriter whose main failing appears to be intense loyalty to his mates and a healthy though misdirected libido.
That loyalty and his over developed sense of insecurity sees him thrown out of his marriage and his house in short order,
He, like many of his friends isnt quite certain exactly how that happened, but it did and he makes the best of itin the worst possible way.
He shacks up for want of a better word withyear old Jade, She of the blood pressure raising body, Despite the age difference Jake is happy, kind of, Jade is pregnant with his babykind of,
He gets caught up with another groupie, . sort of.
He is still madly in love with his soon to be ex wifeuhhuh,
Throw into the mix his day job as a real estate agent which he loathes,
His bosswho he loathes even more,
Cathys his exs boyfriend Harry,
Cathys parentsthe inlawsfromhell,
Shake it, blend it, and what you end up with is a marvelous romp through the night spots of Hull the lives of some marvelously quirky and memorable characters and an all together delightful, fastpaced and very different reading experience.
That date of death category threw me, What if you dont know yetI am a writer, editor and publisher, I have written ten books, the most acclaimed of which are The Dance of the Pheasodile, Missio and Girl on a Bar Stool, The least acclaimed is Fishing, for Christians I still like it, and then there is one in between The Blue Food Revolution which is me in flat out magical realist mode and which is met with either absolute love or absolute suck on the end of this barrel hatred.
I have allowed my quill to blunt and my inkwell to dry while I run Night Reading a community for independent authors withmembers and Night Publishing the associated publishing house withsigned authors.
However, I do have a couple of books That 'date of death' category threw me, What if you don't know yetI am a writer, editor and publisher, I have written ten books, the most acclaimed of which are 'The Dance of the Pheasodile', 'Missio' and 'Girl on a Bar Stool', The least acclaimed is 'Fishing, for Christians' I still like it, and then there is one in between 'The Blue Food Revolution' which is me in flat out magical realist mode and which is met with either absolute love or absolute suck on the end of this barrel hatred.

However, I do have a couple of books planned, so should the Internet go down globally for aboutmonths, they will probably get written so long as there is still electricity I am not writing them by hand or typing them.
