Receive Your Copy Myth And History In The Creation Of Yellowstone National Park Designed By Paul Schullery Available In Audio Book
recently spent a glorious week in Yellowstone with our daughter Jenny and her family and then read Nathaniel Langford's fascinating journal of his discovery of Yellowstone in, this work was an enjoyable and well researched study of one account in Langford's journal.
I particularly liked the broader treatment of myth and actual historical truth and the power myth often holds over truth.
These two works were welcome adjuncts to a marvelous week in a magical place, Yellowstone National Park, a global icon of conservation and natural beauty, was born at the most improbable of times: the American Gilded Age, when altruism seemed extinct and societys vision seemed focused solely on greed and growth.
Perhaps that is why the parks “creation myth” recounted how a few saintlike pioneer conservationists labored to set aside this unique wilderness against all odds, when in fact, the establishment of Yellowstone was the result of complex social, scientific, economic, and aesthetic forces.
Paul Schullery and Lee Whittlesey, both longtime students of Yellowstones complex history, present the first full account of how the fairytale origins of the park found universal public acceptance, and of the long process by which the myth was reconsidered and replaced with a more realistic and ultimately more satisfying story.
What an interesting little book! If you want to see how historians work, this is the book for you.
Schullery amp Whittlesey demonstrate the way historians wrestle with sources and oral accounts of an event or person to create a narrative
as close to "accurate" as possible, all while removing the veil of the process of being a historian.
It's very intriguing to see this process so we'll demonstrated and to see Schullery amp Whittlesey call their "objectivity" into question and others.
It's not a book for everyone, but is well written and would make a great book for wouldbe historians to see how one engages in the work of being a historian.
