introduction to animal relationships on a farm/ranch and a great example of team work, The Guardian Team is a beautifullypresented childrens book about a donkey and a Great Pyrenees dog who are trained to be guard animals for a flock of sheep.
Children and adults alike will enjoy the crisp color photos depicting the animals growing up and taking responsibility for the wooly charges.
Rena and Roo are part of a small but growing movement to make ranching more wildlifefriendly by employing sitelinklivestock guardian animals, rather than the old way of ranchers shooting, poisoning, and trapping every predatory animal in sight.
True, some vegn parents arent going to like the fact that the book centers around sheep being raised agriculturally, as well as the fact that the donkey is a product of the Bureau of Land Managements controversial wild horse and burro roundups.
The author simply repeats the “company line” about this being done to prevent overgrazing,
Nevertheless, I strongly recommend this book, especially to teachers and librarians in the Western ranching states, In a positive, engaging way, this book shows that ranching can be done in harmony with nature, and that conflicts with wildlife dont have to end with cyanide Ms and Compound.
The Guardian Team: On the Job With Rena and Roo
by Cat Urbigkit
Meet a burro named Roo, and a puppy named Rena, and learn how they were brought together to become coworkers as shepherds for a
flock of adorable lambs.
This is a sweet photoessay book about animal relationships and cooperation,
My rating may be somewhat biased, as dogs, donkeys, and lambs are some of my favorite critters.
Books by this author always appeal to me since her stories and photographs focus on animals, and highlight some aspect of the rural world with which many of today's youngsters will be unfamiliar.
This picture book describes how Rena, the runt of the litter, and Roo, a scruffy burro, become friends and an integral part of life on a sheep ranch in Wyoming.
These guardians keep close watch over the lambs and protect them from predators or unwanted intruders, The large photographs trace the animals' growth over a year as well as documenting the bond that grows between Rena and Roo and their fluffy charges.
An Author's Note provides additional information about guardian animals, and the references will provide more reading material on this topic.
Once again, Cat Urbigkit presents interesting information in an engaging way sure to appeal to many young readers, A cute story about working animals, The photograph's were my daughter's favorite part, I love reading books like this to my PJ Storytimersstth graders! Great photos and a nice story about animals what child doesn't like animals Shepherds have used dogs to protect livestock for thousands of years.
But burros also have a natural instinct to protect, which makes them a perfect guardian animals as well, Meet Rena and Roo, a super dogandburro guardian team at work on a sheep ranch in Wyoming, The animals have a close connection with the sheep they protect, but it takes time and effort for Rena and Roo to grow to trust one another.
In this companion book to her awardwinning Brave Dogs, Gentle Dogs, Cat Urbigkit uses simple, informative text and eyecatching photographs to show how Rena and Roo develop into guardian animals.
I originally picked up this book because I was looking for something on sheep, At first I was unsure how I would enjoy it because so many books of this sort are the same old overly simple "this animal is friends with this animal" concept and are so full of excess sweet that you get sick from it half way through.
This book may be simple enough for very young children, but it is not afraid to add longer words to a child's vocabulary in a way that they can easily understand.
The premise of animal friendship is handled in a mature way that is all encompassing and comes full circle as the animals grow and move on from one job to another.
An excellent circle time story for talking about jobs animals do, about life on an animal farm, and of course about friendship.
I always enjoy these photopicture stories about unexpected animal symbiotic relationships, This story is a cute read about a burro and a dog who work together to guard a flock of sheep.
Rena the dog and Roo the burro learn to trust one another, and work as a team to herd and guard the sheep.
This is a very cute book about a orphan donkey and a runt of the litter dog that learn to guard orphan sheep as they grow up.
This is something that can be very important on ranches as the farm animals need someone to watch out for them so the are not killed by predators.
The pictures do a great job of illustrating the story so that it is easy to understand what the animals are doing.
I chose to pair this book with one called Twist and Ernest by Laura T, Barnes and illustrated by Carol A, Camburn. I thought that these would pair well together as the fiction book is about a little donkey who is looking for a friend.
But he had trouble because the new horse wasn't interested in being friends with him at first, In The Guardian Team, Rena and Roo the dog and donkey have to get used to being around each other before they learn to be friends and share their job.
I thought that children might be interested in learning about how animals on farms can learn to like one another and work together after reading Ernest and Twist.
Good story about teamwork and working animals, Great photographs.
