It is not difficult to like this book, It is about a political activist Lorenzo "Lorenz" Diaz, Jr, a lawyer that was tortured and incarcerated by the military during the Martial Law in the Philippines, Antonio Enriquez dedicated this book to sitelinkMayor Cesar Climaco and while reading you would think that the book is about the mayor because there are so many similarities between Lorenz and him.
Despite those similarities, I think the intent of the author was just to use Lorenz to chronicle the sad fate of politicians that opposed President
Ferdinand Marcos during his martial law regime.
This book was published in, thirty years after the lifting of Martial Law inor barelyyears after that Presidential Decreewas signed by him.
So, the youth of today, the teens or in their's or even's, have no actual experience or remembrances on what was life during those dark years in the Philippines: when people should be home beforepm in the province and in the book, beforemidnight here in Manila when male students are not allowed to sport long hair like The Beatles when people are afraid to say any criticism or joke about Marcos and his family TV host Ariel Oreta cycling around the camp, remember or the government in general and when media's freedom was greatly curtailed since Marcos sequestered and ran all the TV stations and newspapers in the country.
What makes this book different from the many Martial Law books that I've read is that the focus was not really on everything evil about Marcos.
Rather, it is the life of a good politician that rose from poverty to become a nationwide popular figure that his admired for his morality, firm conviction to do what is right despite all the threats life after he denied promises for political patronage.
That makes this book highly recommended for:
, Young people who wants to know more about what happened during the Marcos regime especially those who hate reading essays. This is my first Antonio Enriquez and definitely not my last, We writes decently well and except for the typographical errors, this book is one that I will be recommended to anyone whose ignorant about the evils Martial Law brings to a country.
Reading a novel with a good protagonist would make you more interested as you find yourself cheering him on in his successes and crying a tear with him silently during those sad scenes.
. All the Filipino politicians. You can still change this country by learning from Lorenz, The world will remember your legacy by your good deeds what good you will leave to your country and not the illgotten material wealth that your family will inherit.
Your spouse, children, grandchildren or greatgrandchildren will remember you but the world will not, But Cesar Climaco, for example He will be fondly remembered forever in the hearts of the Zamboangenos,
Antonio Enriquez transports us to the Philippine capital city of Zamboanga in the grip of a military dictatorship and assassination, where protagonist Lorenz Diaz, Jr.
, a rising socialist, dares to challenge the despot Ferdinand Marcos, In search for truth and freedom, he was imprisoned several times in notorious military stockades unsure if the sun would shine in his face or on his abandoned corpse in the “killing fields” the next day.
As we follow Lorenzs struggle against the dictator Marcos, we too discover a nation in terror, As a historical novel, its peculiar gift is that it doesn't read like one but as a suspenseful mystery novel, keeping us wellentertained, our eyeballs glued to its pages, but unlike a detective novel unscrambling the oppression and horror of Martial Law.
