on Never Say Never

Alert:

This book had some of what I really like and what I really don't,

Happily, it wasn't the sort of book that I was dying to finish just for having started it, It had a story that was interesting and, though predictable at times, still had enough turns I never saw coming, I did care about the characters and I wanted it to work out in the end, It also brought up some real life issues like career vs, family and good old fashioned homophobia that the characters struggled with throughout, These merits earned the book three, in my opinion,

Now for the parts that troubled me and kept it from being even a four star book,

. I've already said this: it was too long, The plot was interesting enough, but I think the overdedication of words to the protagonists' trains of thought and a shortage of explanation in some crucial scenes, such as the mother rejecting Brian for being gay, was quite disproportionate.
In many cases, the inner battles of a character were painfully redundant, Yet when the mother simply prohibited from ever speaking to her or her family again, not another word was ever written,

. The onedimensionality of the parents was excruciatingly difficult to swallow, Brian's father, for example, who was only dedicated to his career and to his other children, and seemed to hate Brian for little apparent reason, did not ring true with me.
I think, in almost every case, parents love their children, even when circumstances make it difficult, perhaps, to express the love, This man never had even five seconds for the boy, Then, when he returned from nearly two months of torturous kidnapping, he instantly rejected him for being gay, Traumatic events, like a kidnapping, allow for transcendence,

. The major pendulum swings. It seemed like overnight, both protagonists were instant, worldwide successes, One suddenly became the world's number one model, despite having no experience and being so skinny that his ribs made valleys on his chest.
The other, again with almost no experience, became the world's most soughtafter reporter, and then the most despised one, and then the most beloved one again.
Couldn't they be reasonably successful without rising

to the top so fictitiously

, Dialogue. Sometimes it was just too contrived,

. Good old grammar. With a book this long, I do expect errors, but how many times would I have to read "Brain" instead of "Brian" The spell check was clearly used, accounting for few misspellings, but many wrong words.
The book hadn't been edited that carefully,

Brian Marano is devastated when the father he adores walks out on him and his mother to start over with a new family.
When Brian develops into an outstanding athlete, he thinks hes found a way to regain his fathers love, When an injury ends his career football career, he uses his looks to pursue a journalistic career in the hot spots of the world with the same goal in mind.
He cant allow his growing relationship with Jason Ratcliffe to get out of control because his father hates gays, Its not until Brian is captured, tortured, and put into solitary confinement that he stops long enough to discover what is really important to him.
Jason agreed to tutor Brian so he can stay on the high school football team, but he quickly decided Brian was much more than a dumb jock.
Through high school and college, he prods Brian to believe in himself, to attempt more than he thinks he can accomplish, Jason has loved Brain almost from the moment he realized he was gay, but he knows Brian values his fathers love and recognition more than he values Jasons love.
Is nine years too long to wait for what might never be,
