Retrieve If Boys Could Hold Hands Author David J. Lavallee Rendered As Print
is a high school senior on the basketball team, has a steady girlfriend and a solid group of friends, And then Luis moves into town, Garrett begins to wrestle with his feelings for Luis and the implications of coming out in a small town and finds that the greatest obstacle to being his true self is himself.
It took me a little while to get into this particular story, The first chapter occursyears before the rest of the book, and that threw me for a loop until I realized what was going on, Also, the author does an excellent job of description and narration, giving background details and describing the environment, so the story proceeds more slowly than I usually expect, If you are the type of reader who appreciates lots of description like in Annabel, The White Darkness, or the Lord of the Rings trilogy, you will really enjoy the journey through this book.
I enjoyed these descriptions, but occasionally became impatient for the action to begin again,
I enjoyed the story for itself, and would recommend it for high school students, especially those who seem to read everything they can get their hands on.
This book is also appropriate for adults, and those who grew up in the northeastern United States will appreciate the geographic references and the descriptions,
I received a complimentary copy of this book through the Goodreads First Reads program for the purposes of review, I truly enjoyed this “comingofage and coming out” remarkable story, Revealing oneselfcoming out of a closetis courageous, not always easy but undeniably rewarding, Davids book captures the complexity of dealing with your sexuality and serves as a tribute to the power of acceptance, Loved it! I can't wait for David's next book, I expected so much more from this book, It could have been so much deeper and better organized, The storyline remained on the surface throughout, with the potential to be deeper time and time again to no avail, Not to mention there were some errorshello editor I was not a fan of the way the story was written it jumped from time periods without warning and it did the same with character's perspective.
I would be in one character's head and then suddenly in another, The book needed better structure,
There were some parts that I did like but overall it just didn't work for me, I don't think there was enough depth for me to truly feel the impact of Luis and Garrett's relationship, All I got from that was Garrett constantly pushing him away and Luis being more of a doormat, To tell you the truth, we never get much of the relationship it is always small glimpses, Honestly, I think, there was more detail in a basketball game than there was of them or anything really, The book needed more. I also wish the author would have went in a different direction with Luis's story but it is what it is, Another great book
Can relate in so many ways, its not sad but empowering it motivates me to not hide from the world, Heartbreaking. Garrett Dumaine seems to have everything going for him, He has a beautiful girlfriend and is a starter on Crandall Highs basketball team, But deep down, Garrett holds a secret that he knows will change his life forever, The flame never seemed to go totally off, but would flicker and spit on low when it had been stymied or smothered, He was tired of being vigilant, Tired of always needing to watch, Tired of a
flareup that he needed to ignore, His neat and organized life starts to unravel when he meets Luis Velasquez, a new transfer student, Although awakened by his secret relationship with Luis, Garrett finds it increasingly difficult to maintain one foot in each world, And when tragedy strikes, nothing can prepare Garrett to confront the person that holds him back the most, . . With If Boys Could Hold Hands, David Lavallee weaves together beautiful prose, imagery, and dialogue into a coming of age story in which teens and adults alike can be entranced by the classic tale of how environment and fear influence selfdiscovery.
Like too many others. The dialogue between characters wasn't enough and then the phasing in and out between characters as well as flashbacks had me a bit lost at times, Was just soso for me, I would give the author another chance, David J.
