This review does include a few spoilers!
This is Bookof the P, O. L. A. R. Private Ops: League Arctic Rescue series which takes place in Sunkissed Key, Florida, Hardly a place for polar bear shifters to exist, but when your boss pisses off someone on high, well, you have to deal with whatever cards youve been dealt with.
At least you wont be alone except if you dont have a mate, And apparently, a mate is necessary to tolerate the sht life dealt you,
Dmitry is the teams sniper/killer/assassin, Hes terribly good at what he does, Unfortunately, though he sees himself as a necessary evil, he also finds himself totally unsuitable to being anyones mate, let alone Kerrigan Trans mate.
He has decided she needs someone far more gentle without the karmic staining on his armor, After all, she really needs a protector as she is such a klut who probably trips over air!
Kerrigan is the teams dispatcher and allaround office lady so to speak.
The problem is that she really sucks at her job, She has zero confidence in herself, especially since she keeps screwing up the easiest of messages from Central Office.
That, alone, has sent the team to incorrect locations, loaded for bear, only to discover that they were prepared to take out a rapid shifter except they just busted down the door of an elderly couple's home.
No, it doesnt help that the ancient husband practically dishes Serges ass to him with both hands, And Serges the alpha of the team! She has a total crush on Dmitry but cannot even do the simplest of things like walking and breathing in his presence.
To her, Dmitry blows hot and cold, always keeping his words and gestures to himself, As far as shes concerned, he cares nothing for her,
Thats the problem, He cares too much and obsessively follows her so that she stays out of trouble, much to his detriment.
So its time to sht or get off the pot, For both of them. Who knows what will happen
Length and pace: This book was longer than Book, In fact, I would daresay that it was a much longer novella and just shy of being a short novel.
Thats great for me! I liked what I was reading since I wasn't looking for great depth, The pace was fine without rushing, though I so wished to know how things went after the great Reveal of Emotions.
So many unanswered questions about how their relationship ended up being like, We really need an epilogue!
Characters: In comparison to Roman Book, Dmitry was dark and reclusive and brooding which just makes him so much more delectable.
He truly believes he isnt worthy of any kind of love, especially hers, when he knows they are true mates.
How he manages to stay away from her without claiming her for this long is quite amazing, and it was one of the things that caused a hiccup in my suspension of disbelief.
Yeah, the inevitable speed bump in my reading, Fine, so he does spend most of this book angsting over Kerrigan from afar, I can relate to that, Anyone who is the king or queen of unrequited love fully understands that kind of despair, Maybe thats why I identified so much with Dmitry rather than Kerrigan, It isnt that I wasnt sympathetic towards Kerrigan, I most certainly was. Maybe she wasnt hurting the way Ive felt back in those days, But that didnt make me appreciate her any less, She definitely lacks selfconfidence and many social skills, I do love her cute, little diatribe to Megan about how she was completely outofcontrol with her life, and Megan had everything about hers so together.
Now that I had read Book, I can
definitely disagree with Kerrigans analysis of Megans history of relationships, but she does give Kerrigan the best answer in this book.
She doesnt have it altogether, The best anyone can to do is to try really hard to keep his/her sht together, I only wish we could have seen these two discover more about each other as Megan and Roman did or at least tried.
Was this books plot line a template Oh, yeah, it was! But Im reading this strictly for the brain candy that Bookproved itself to be.
Worldcreation: In my review of Book, I made the statement that this island was way too small to be selfsustaining in the biosphere represented by the writer.
I still maintain that opinion, or all the buildings would have toppled down due to liquefaction of the sandy foundation they were built upon.
In this book, we all learn more about Sunkissed Key, Florida with all its beaches and bars and cafes and coffee shops and boutiques.
Keep in mind that a few centuries of hurricanes and tropical storms should had eroded most of this island away had it actually been three miles in length as originally designed by the author just like so many outer islands are disappearing off the coasts of North and South Carolinas.
I do like how much entertainment is available on this isle, I dont believe in Spring Break, but I would if this island truly existed, I think it would be so much fun to visit just to explore and be lazy on the beaches.
Maybe some bodysurfing. I dont do boards. Definitely the tiki bar and the Bayfront Diner! So I see this part as a success,
Continuity, plot, and editing: Still the usual usual problems with punctuation and grammar I usually see made in indie books written today.
However, compared to Book, I noticed more wrong words appearing and words missing that should have been discovered and corrected with a few readthroughs.
So far, continuity has been maintained from Book, I only wish we could know more about how things have gone with Megan and Roman other than theyre still in the honeymoon of their mating.
As for Serge and Hannah, we get a few additional tidbits on what had happened to them, I dont know if well ever now what Serge did to truly piss off his superiors, The one thing Im seeing is a template of its own making, Boy and girl feel mutual attraction, Something is preventing boy and girl from boinking each other, Problems with communication make boy and girl misunderstand whats really going on with each other, Boy and girl, after much emotional angst, get together/boink each other, and SUDDENLY THE END!!!!!! I think a nice, little epilogue is warranted here.
It doesnt have to eat into the next book, but the readership needs some aftercare, lady!
Realism: Unlike the previous book, Im seeing this book sidling over to the usual, overworked shifter boy/human girl romance template.
This is a real shame, I hope Bookwould be a little different, At least Kerrigan ends of quitting her job with P, O. L. A. R. Usually, the template would have dictated that the heroine would either maintain her job including the fringe benefits that come with it! or becomes a stayathome baby mama who doesnt have to work anymore because her mate is bringing in all the ! At least were looking at something far more realistic.
Despite my whining, I did like this book enough to finish reading it and Ill probably reread it again at least once.
As mentioned in my review of Book, I did buy the rest in the series so far, And why not Its fun brain candy, but I only wished that our writer could have done a few more original subplots that would have torpedoed my opinion regarding the templated plot line from my subconscious brain.
So we did have some distractions that affected my suspension of disbelief, I wish it could had been otherwise, At least Im not spending a ton of cash is all I can say,
Stars.

Thank you, Jessica Ramsey, for the above template! Hero
These two are the polar opposite, it takes them going threw scary stuff to see each others true feelings will they or won't they I liked it, but there are some questions.
Kerrigan has a Master's Degree, but in what If her mom is married to some big wig, why did Kerrigan have to take out a loan from a loan shark Where's her dad Did mom refuse to pay for her Master's Why is she not using her degree She has a Master's degree, but doesn't know how to take notes
Dmitri is a bit of an ass, and a bit too concerned that he's a "monster" without really giving much of a reason for it.
It didn't seem like he was any different than any of the other guys, but for some reason thought he was a monster.
That wasn't exactly clear as to why he thought that, Also, it kept referencing him checking on her pretty much nightly, even while she lived in her car, If he knew she was living in her car, why didn't he tell Serge sooner Is he the one that told Serge she was living in her car, or how did Serge find out
I liked the book.
It was a sweet read, If the thing had been fleshed out more, I would have given it a higher rating, I just had way too many question that never got answered, that kind of should have been, .
