A more serious and a bit melancholy tone is set in this Christmas story, Dan has been recovering from an accident but he struggles, Aaron his best friend who wants to be more has been there for Dan throughout his recovery, but is having trouble getting beyond their current status quo.
Dan is afraid and he's having trouble moving forward and expressing what Aaron means to him and he knows it's hurting Aaron and ultimately himself as well.
I liked the exploration of Dan's fears and struggles, This is a good short story and has the makings of the foundation for a very good novel should the author care to expand this into something longer.
This is a festive romance with a difference, It also has a bit of a surreal, almost out of body ghostly element to it during which Dan realises he's slowly sinking into his own head.
There's a gentle building up of tension, to the point where I was really rooting for Aaron and his unwavering support of Dan's depression even as you could see he was hurt by what was happening.
Thankfully, it being a festive read, there's an upturn on the horizon and Dan's realisation that when he's with Aaron, his black dog is easier to keep at bay.
I loved the way these two connected and were able to discuss their feelings once Dan had his epiphany,
ARC kindly received from the author in return for an honest and unbiased review, How do you escape problems you're facing when they are inside yourself Dan, from 'Nowhere to Hide' by Clare London, is an emotional mess, but he can't seem to see that his attitudes are what is holding him back, keeping him from healing in order to solve a problem he must first recognize it.
Only then is he able to change it,
From past experience, Dan's perception of the Christmas season is a dire one and not without reason, Throughout his life, bad things seem to always happen during Christmastime, the most recent being his horrendous car accident, All of the therapy, counseling, encouragement, and medication has helped, but not enough, Dan still sees himself as a broken, fearful, wreck of a man, with nothing to offer anyone, He's desperately lonely but afraid to commit for fear of hurting himself and Aaron, Dan needs to do some serious soulsearching, decide what is important or he can continue to wallow in his selfpity and lose everything,
Aaron is a gem, a real blessing for Dan, Everyone deserves to be loved the way Aaron does Dan, Aaron understands that Dan's negative selfperception is the key to his inability to recover and lead a normal life, He's also relatively sure that Dan loves him just as much as he adores Dan, Aaron has infinite patience and graciousness, He puts his own feelings on hold, doing everything he can to make Dan feel as comfortable as possible, He gives Dan plenty of space, while at the same time he welcomes him with open arms whenever he's feeling courageous enough to act on his feelings, and doesn't blame or criticize Dan when it doesn't work out.
Aaron inherently knows that if he doesn't react this way, Dan might lose himself forever, He loves Dan with all his heart and refuses to let go, even if it means leaving Dan in order to afford him the opportunity to heal without feeling any kind of pressure to do so.
What Aaron most wishes for Dan is that he could see himself as Aaron sees him,
Although this story is not a bouncy, sugarcoated holiday story, it is quite touching and profound, The pace was slow and measured in the beginning, suiting the internal struggle that Dan was going through, while highlighting Aaron's patient understanding of the matter.
The resolution comes, as many do after one has an Epiphany that is lifechanging, I recommend this book to those who like to read about more realistic characters who struggle with difficult, but not impossible circumstances, and come out better for it.
Thanks, Clare, for adding your magical touch to my reading and reminding us that Christmas miracles can and do happen, Quick, short hurt comfort read, IMO, the big epiphany in the end was too quick coming, but still an enjoyable read, In recovery after a serious car accident, Dan struggles with pain and depression until it becomes an ingrained part of his
life, His most important support has come from his best friend and boyfriend Aaron, yet Dan knows hes not giving as much as taking from the relationship.
When he and Aaron are snowed in at a winter sports resort, Dan has to face up to both his physical and emotional restraints.
Aaron is determined and devoted, and always willingly there for Dan, but Dan can see his weariness, Aaron wants Dan to accept his love fully, for them to become the best and most intimate of lovers, But how much longer will Aaron wait
It takes a particularly bitter Christmas and the weirdest of dreams to give Dan the courage to grasp whats important to him, and find the way back to health and love.
Short, emotional story that I did enjoy, but would have enjoyed even more if it had been longer, This is an unusual Christmas story, It starts off with a more serious and melancholy tone, than you would expect for such a story, Dan hasn't had the best of times, he seems to be sinking further and further into himself, He realises that he is pushing away his friends and his would be boyfriend, Aaron, but feels that it's probably for the best, Best for them, not him,
What follows is a short, but emotional story, It's not your usual sweet and cute Christmas story, but it's beautifully written and explores what Dan is going through, examining his internal struggle.
The epiphany, when it comes, is life changing, A change to read such a story at this time of the year, and certainly made me think, Would make a good full length novel, I think, Clare took the pen name London from the city where she lives, loves, and writes, A lone, brave female in a frenetic, testosterone fuelled family home, she juggles her writing with her other day job as an accountant, Shes written in many genres and across many settings, with award winning novels and short stories published both online and in print, She says she likes variety in her writing while friends say shes just fickle, but as long as both theories spawn good fiction, shes happy.
