on The Journey of Alvar Nunez Cabeza De Vaca

readable and fascinating account of Cabeza de Vaca's journey, as recorded by himself, After reading a fictionalized account to my kids for homeschool Walk the World's Rim, I was curious to read what actually happened.
An expedition failed, many starved or were lost at sea on makeshift barges, some killed by "Indians" until only four were left, surviving as slaves of some native peoples on the gulf coast.
They escape and travel all the way to Mexico, surviving by good relationship with the native Americans as they pray for their healing along the way.
Everyone gets better when they pray, even one is apparently raised from the dead, They become known as healers and are escorted village to village, tribe to tribe, observing the cultures, Fascinating history.

The narrative of Cabeza de Vaca is short enough to read every few years, I've read two translations and bogged down in the originalth century Spanish original and now believe it's a good idea to read a couple of different scholars' take on connotation and nuance.

Though on the surface the narrative seems to be a thrilling survival story a la raft of the Medusa, Endurance, the real point of interest is how Cabeza de Vaca interpreted his perceived ability to perform miracles, on cue, in God's name.
Cabeza de Vaca believes he raised the dead, Before this, he was a mid level bureaucrat,

Cabeza de Vaca's translators and at least one biographer I've read put his head in different places on this.
Some would have him be a delusional manic depressive with a messiah complex, Others would have him merely be a dutiful instrument for God,

The fun is comparing a couple of versions and trying to get to know him, It's a little harder than it would seem, though, The narrative wasn't written with an aim to be widely published, It was written as a report to the Spanish king, There's no plausible assumption that Cabeza de Vaca is reliable he was writing partly to save his own hide.
So it's really a lot like a puzzle, One that can be worked different ways, estrellazas!

Pero eso sí: Ojo! Cuidado! Be careful!

Ruta de Cabeza de Vaca y tres sus compañeros: My students have to read a section of this from their textbook.
It's their first assignment of the year for my class, So I thought I might read through the entire journal, It's as dry as you might expect, but there are some interesting things that reveal themselves through the course of the book.
Most importantly is the change in de Vaca's interaction and attitude with the native population, The natives that he encounters near Galveston Island are described as much more vicious and savage than the ones that he encounters toward the end of his journey through Texas and Mexico.
While de Vaca himself may not have been aware of this, since he was writing it as a reflection back on his journey, it seems that this change in the natives is much more of a product of de Vaca's own approach to them, rather than any drastic change in the mentality of the natives themselves.
At Galveston, de Vaca is still "the conquistador" bent on conquest and subjugation, But later, as he wanders through Texas naked and starving, his relationship with the Indians changes, Then he more interested in mere survival, And this could not but change the way he treated and acted toward the native population, What seems ironic is de Vaca's last encounter with another group of conquistadors, who he sees as brutal and cruel, and he begs for them to leave the native population to lead their own lives.
Next time I read this which will be the third time, If memory serves I'll write a real review.
But: I don't give manystar ratings, and this is one, If you have any interest in this topic and this period in American history, you NEED to read this one.
It

will be an eyeopener!

As is often the case, I'm surprised how many indifferent to outright hatemail reviews this one gets.
The hates were school assignments The indifferents just didn't much care Presumably, most who read this are long past their classroom years.
But if you live in the area he wandered through: here's the current historians rough consensusguess as to his route from Florida across what's now the southern US, into the SW US, into northern presentday Mexico, until he finally met Mexican slavers near Culiacan: sitelink wikipedia. org/wiki/Cl His small party wandered for about years after leaving the vicinity of Galveston, Texas, escaping from enslavement by local Indians there.
It's a remarkable story. Plus: it's short! Online copy of the Covey translation: sitelink ibiblio. org/eldritch/cdv/r .
