Alexandra Winthrop, the toast of London, is now an Indian captive, She daringly traveled to the Canadian colonies to forget Dominic, the Frenchman who showed her brief raptureonly to disappear and break her heart.
Now she is plunged into a world of unimaginable brutality, facing a journey from primeval forests to wartorn Montreal, from a war chief's dark desires to the man who is her destiny.
Agh! What a story.

Lady Alexandra Winthrop, 'Alix', and Dominic, Marquis de Villiers, met two years ago at a dance.
She was a mere seventeen to his,

Honestly, I could never figure out how old he was,

Anyways, they met, saw each other again and fell in love, We are talking soulmates, loveofmylife, Iwillneverleaveyou love, Dominic approached Alix's grandfather, the Duke of Leicester, to ask for her hand in marriage,

He. Was. Told. No. He never returned to Alix, Angry, he left for New France, It was.

Fast forward two years and Alix was in New France visiting her widowed sister and children.
She was trying to convince Julia to return to England now that her soldierhusband had died, Oh, I forgot to mention that Alix is now betrothed to an English officer, She had finally talked her sister into leaving when, lo and behold, both Alix, Julia and the two young children were kidnapped by a tribe of Ojibwa.

This was a violently graphic read for a historical romance, I didn't know this when I started the book,

Things don't look pretty, Weeks go by with plenty of suffering before the Ojibwa find the way to their village, By then Julia had died and Alix was made to promise to return to England somehow, Safely. With the children.

Eventually Dominic showed up unaware that Alix was in camp, He was a fur trader now, When he finally saw Alix the past came rushing back at him full force, He had never stopped loving her,

I am only referring to about the first/of the story, To say that THE RECKONING was simply a historical romance would not do it justice, The author tried to give you an honest depiction how things were with an 'Author's Note' at the beginning of the book.
You could tell Ms. Baker did quite a bit of research,

I learned about the intense struggles from this era, I laid the book down on more than one occasion, I am giving it.because of the violence and some minor choppiness with the storyline,
.Usually Jeanette Baker writes about Ireland so I was surprised to find this book among my paperbacks, This story takes place in New France where Quebec now is, since my own ancestors came from New France and the Blackfoot tribe, this was very mesmerizing to me.
I found it hard to put down, A noblewoman comes to New France when her sister is widowed, The idea is to take her back home to England but before that can happen they are attacked and abducted by Indians.
Unknown to her, her past love from Paris is also in New France, They meet again and lead each other a dangerous and merry chase, I love all things Irish, the language, a good cup of tea, soda bread, stew, smoked salmon, banoffee pie, green hills, happy cows, chedder cheese, and all things Southern, sweet iced tea, southern hospitality, everything written by Anne Rivers Siddons and Johanna Trollope, blazing sunsets, driving through hot desert nights with the windows open, coffee and conversation with good friends, Katherine Hepburn movies, dessert, intimate gatherings and bright breezy days.
I live in Southern California during the winter months where I teach school to remarkably well behavedth graders.
During the summer months I live in County Kerry, Ireland where I take long walks, listen to traditional music, sigh over gray skies and
