much as I love pulp and spy fiction of thes ands Mission: Impossible being one of my alltime favorite television series, I was thoroughly unfamiliar with either of the title characters in Eckert and Baugh's new short novel from Moonstone Books.
That didn't stop me from being interested in reading the
book, Eckert as one of the officially approved "continuers" of the Wold Newton work of Phillip Jose Farmer and Baugh whose fiction has appeared in Black Coat Press' Tales of the Shadowmen anthologies and elsewhere have the right touch when it comes to taking older fictional properties like these and telling new stories that remain faithful to the characterizations and worldbuilding of the authors who created the characters.
I knew I'd be in good hands and in for a fun story, and wasn't disappointed, The authors keep the action moving at a fast pace, sprinkle in hefty doses of the type of innuendoladen humors PI and spy shows were known for, and allow time for each main and supporting character to shine showing us new readers some of what made these characters so interesting in their time period.
You can argue that, as television properties, Honey and Cat were interesting to viewers because Anne Francis and Robert Loggia were just so damned attractive, but there had to be more to at least Honey, who appeared in novels before and I think after the television series existed.
For fans who love to dig for hidden connections and character cameos, there are tons of little nods in this book: to other tv/prose private detectives and spies of the era including pivotal appearances by a certain unnamed pair of "uncles", to a very famous Asian mastermind name changed for copyright reasons, but any fan of the genre will recognize him, and even to other stories by Eckert and Baugh.
None of these little nods slow the action or detract from the focus on the main characters, but they are a fun exercise for readers who are so inclined.
The book also includes character biography timelines researched and created by the authors, putting the various television series, novels and comic books in logical order and even filling in some blanks in the characters' histories.
I've done some research and begun to become familiar with Honey West and T, H. E. Cat although it's been easier to track down / purchase the former's tv show on dvd than the latter thanks to this book.
I'm not sure if Moonstone has retained the licenses on these characters, but if they have I hope we'll see more Honey West and T.
H. E. Cat prose adventures together or separately in the near future, If you likesstyle action and adventure, you'll love this book, If you like crossovers and the Wold Newton Universe, you'll like this book, If you like good writing, you'll like this book, Authors Eckert and Baugh have penned a gem here, There is constant action and so many crossover references it'll make your head spin, I've read one Honey West story before, and this one rivals it, easily, I've never seen an episode of T, H. E. Cat, but this book makes me want to find the whole series on DVD, The other thing this book makes me want to do is read more adventures of Honey West and T.
H. E. Cat. Get this book, read it, and enjoy! When an exotic greeneyed Asian doctor hires Honey to recover a stolen sample of a new influenza vaccine from a rival scientist, the blonde bombshell private eyesuspicious but boredtakes the case.
But when she's attacked not once, but twice, on her way from Long Beach to San Francisco to track down her quarry, she knows there's moremuch moreto her femme fatale client than meets the eye.
Along the way, Honey's onetime paramour Johnny Doomexbounty hunter and current Company agentreenters the picture, and the gorgeous doctor's insidiousand deadlygrandfather deals himself in.
But when Honey questions whether Johnny's playing her game, or just playing her for a patsy, she joins forcesas only Honey canwith the one man in Frisco who can help her recover the stolen vaccinecumbioweapon and prevent a worldwide epidemicformer cat burglarturnedbodyguard Thomas Hewitt Edward Cat: T.
H. E Cat! I'm a huge fan of both Win Scott Eckert and Matthew Baugh's writing, and this book is up to their usual high standards.
This is a great teamup between two classic characters, G, G. Fickling's P. I. Honey West perhaps known to many through the TV series starring Anne Francis and thief turned club owner and bodyguard Thomas Hewitt Edward Cat, played by Robert Loggia on the show T.
H. E. CAT. Mr. Eckert and Mr. Baugh treat both characters with respect, and show a great fidelity to the source materials, Fans of Philip Jose Farmer's Wold Newton Universe like myself or Mr, Eckert and Mr. Baugh will enjoy the appearances by, and references to, characters from other works of fiction, many of which are veiled for copyright reasons.
Readers of "Yellow Peril" fiction will realize that the insidious Dr, Shan Ming Fu has another, more infamous name, while keeneyed fans of Eckert's will realize that Dr.
Karl Stipier appears under a variety of aliases in several of his other stories, and that he is ultimately Farmerian in origin.
The timelines of Honey and Cat's exploits following the story are verywell researched and a nice bonus.
Mr. Eckert and Mr. Baugh are two of my favorite writers, and Moonstone Books is one of my favorite publishers, Kudos to them for this superb novel! If you love's Spy genre, you'll LOVE this book!
Very Wold Newton, but can also be enjoyed by ANYONE who just loves adventure and female heroes who NEVER take a backseat to the guys!
Great read.
