Glynn can barely make ends meet in New York City when she befriends Michelle, a homeless drunk in her neighborhood, Previously a beauty queen in Italy, Michelle had come to the states when an American photographer convinced her that fame and fortune awaited, Drugs and alcohol got in the way of that dream, Putting her life aside and risking her own safety, Judith is determined to recover Michelles dignity and return her to her family in Italy, But is Michelle too far gone, preferring street life and possible death in a gutter over Judiths guiding light back into society

Present in this inspirational memoir is Judith's personal struggle to overcome her past and change her life.
But is she wise to involve her family with Michelle, a woman she's grown to love during their odyssey All told, nothing is easy in this book, When the story should be ending, it begins all over again, So many people talk about the plight of the homeless, or drop a few coins into a kettle at Christmastime, This author actually did something, and it all started with a caring relationship, Yes, she helped only one person, If each one of us did the same, imagine what an impact that would have, I appreciated the writer not glossing over the difficulty of her mission, and her refusal to portray herself as a faultless saint, In fact, tidbits about the author's introspection and interaction with her family are perhaps the most thoughtprovoking of this totally engaging book, I've been entertained. Now I'm challenged. Great read. Unfortunately and fortunately, I have been on both sides of the topic of this true story,
Firstly as the alcoholic needing the help, then as the recovered alcoholic wanting to help others,
Thankfully I'm still able to be helping others,
I must commend the author on her monumental undertaking storied here as I know how hard that battle can be, Having the foresight to know first off that recovery is not something that can be forced on others just because we may deem it necessary,
Doesn't work that way,
A touching story that I shall remember for some time to come, What a strange story good read just long enough good ending. This was an interesting true story about the author and a homeless woman she tries to help in the NYC neighborhood where she lives, Judith Glynn would see Michelle around her neighborhood, an alcoholic and drug addict for a time, married to another street person, and hanging out with a close knit homeless group.
She and her husband once, happy and well to do, fell into the lure of alcohol, Michelle was an Italian citizen who had come to the USA ten years before, after an American photographer put the thoughts of fame and fortune in her head as she had been a beauty queen in her small town in Italy.

The author gives us the graphic details of being a street

person, and it is not a pretty picture, She befriended Michelle, and over a course of two years tries to convince her to clean up her act and to maybe go home to her family in Italy.
She gains her trust by not forcing her to give up anything, yet not supplying her with anything either, just a friendly face and an ear to listen,
The story will definitely keep you interested, and make you wonder about the street people we see in any city or town, A true story of how Judith befriended a homeless woman on the the streets of New York and her dilemma to get her back home to her family in Italy.
A must read. Wonderful.

What a story, Judith Flynn writes an amazing story of her selflessness and compassion for others, She doesn't write to toot her own horn but to bring awareness to homelessness and alcoholism, Thank you for writing and all you did for Mire! An insightful memoir of two women, an independent New Yorker and a homeless woman

This memoir details the accidental coming together of a writer in New York.
Over several years, Judith learns to love Michele, homeless woman enough to persist in helping her return to her Italian family, Some of us don't make eye contact with anyone different than ourselves, Some of us are selfless, Someone once told me every action is a result of fear or love, Judith's story is one of friendship and love, . . maybe even of love conquering fear, Two lives enriched by a relationship that, to most, would seem utterly unlikely, Judith's story will restore your faith in humanity, Emotional at times yet quick and easy to read, You can't help but want to know how the story ends, Great perspective on homelessness in America

A very interesting look into how compassion can change people in any situation but doesn't always save them from themselves.
This truelife story about one woman's befriending of a homeless woman in New York City is a pleasant read, I appreciated Ms. Glynn's realism her perspective was not one of savior, but of average citizen with a heart, I struggled, at times, to find compassion within myself to identify with the homeless woman Michelle, and also with Ms, Glynn as she attempted to intersperse her personal vulnerability throughout the novel, Often, however, the vulnerability was presented too matteroffact and I lacked real emotional connection, An interesting story, but not a lifealtering perspective, In this true story, Glynn tells of her experience trying to help a homeless woman she met on the streets of New York, Michelle, originally from Italy, is sick, filthy and hopelessly addicted to alcohol, But something makes Glynn stop and talk to her, They become friends, and Glynn embarks on a nearimpossible quest to get Michelle sober and help her go home to Italy, Glynn, divorced, short on money and separated from most of her family, has her own issues, Its a gripping story, well told, and it will stick in my mind for a long time, Glynn has also recently published a novel, A Collector of Affections, which is next on my reading list, Synopsis: "Judith Glynn can barely make ends meet in New York City when she befriends Michelle, a homeless drunk in her neighborhood, Previously a beauty queen in Italy, Michelle had come to the states when an American photographer convinced her that fame and fortune awaited, Drugs and alcohol got in the way of that dream, Putting her life aside and risking her own safety, Judith is determined to recover Michelles dignity and return her to her family in Italy, But is Michelle too far gone, preferring street life and possible death in a gutter over Judiths guiding light back into society

My : I picked this book up when I met Judith Glynn at the RI Author Expo, This was an interesting book and outside of my normal reading comfort zone, I must say it was a difficult book for me to read, it was not a happy book by any means, it is a struggle, While the main subject of the book is about Judith's connection to a homeless woman, Michelle, and her struggle to return her to sobriety and her home in Italy, it is also about Judith's own struggle to find herself to solid ground after walking away from her previous life.
It is inspirational to read about the courage one person had and was able to change the life, even for a brief time of someone else, While I don't believe I would be able to step up the way Judith did, it is still eye opening to the humanity around us, Reading this book was like pulling off a bandaid, You want to do it fast and get it over with because you know it's going to hurt a lot, but you can't because you're afraid of how bad it might be.
So you tear it off slowly, getting used to the pain little by little as you go, Reading a firsthand account of someone who was intimately connected to possibly the lowest status a human can get was so hard that I wanted to hurry up and get to the end, but I knew there was no way the end was going to be filled with sunshine, so I prolonged it, little by little.

One of the most interesting things about this story is that the author herself was in no position to take on the cause of a homeless woman.
The author was working as a temp and living in a one room apartment herself, and she certainly didn't have any fauxnoble Mother Teresa aspirations to change the world.
She simply stepped up and made life some measure better for another human being, It was an amazing story, and a very wellcrafted book, .
