of the book describes not Flex but his intelligent, honest, upstanding, fearless, brilliant, beautiful young comrade Ernst Wurche who is elevated to a saint like figure like the brave Baldr.
The book offers a good insight into the spirit of the young generation consumed by the Great War as represented by Wurche, who is a member of the Wandervogel movement, memorized Goethe and reads both the bible and Nietzsche's Zarathustra.
More so than the war it describes the silence before the storm that Flex and Wurche spend together in the Baltic nature, where they swim in forest lakes and lie on their backs in fields in full bloom, listening to the birds and watching the clouds until eventually war and devastation creeps in.
As soppy as Flex's love for his comrade Wurche seems at first the bitter ending to their friendship and the impact it has on Flex, who withdraws into himself and writes poetry to cope with his loss, is all the more touching.


It should also be mentioned that Flex's love for Wurche doesn't seem to be entirely platonic, Flex doesn't hesitate to repeatedly describe not just Wurche's spiritual but also his physical beauty and one gets the impression he was hopelessly in love with the young man.

Gleichzeitig ist es der Versuch, mit dem Schrecken des Krieges als einem sinnvollen Erleben fertig zu werden insofern besteht doch wieder Anschluß an die großen Beispiele dieser Zeit.
Allerdings webt Flex aus den Versatzstücken der zeitgenössischen Propaganda ein Weltbild, das ihn viel älter als die vergleichbaren Beispiele erscheinen lassen denn er weist nicht über seine Zeit hinaus.

Diese "Propaganda" wird aber so deutlich und interessant von der Wahrheitsliebe in der Darstellung der Gefühle gebrochen, das sich die Lektüre dennoch lohnt.

Neben dieser Brüchigkeit der Selbstbetäubung ist an dem Band aber auch das harte Nebeneinander von behaupteter edler Gesinnung, "tiefsinniger" Betrachtung der Welt und eine menschenverachtende Rede und Handlungsweise aufschlußreich und interessant.

Il Viandante tra due mondi è Ernst Wurche, l'amico a cui il libro è dedicato, ma potrebbe benissimo essere anche lo stesso Flex, Quella di Wurche è una figura che sembra andare oltre lo spazio e il tempo, L'autore è attratto dalla sua solare vitalità, dalla serenità con cui accetta il suo destino di soldato, Entrambi si trovano su un confine invisibile tra il mondo spirituale di una spiritualità che, seppur servendosi di simboli cristiani, tende verso l'universalità e il mondo "terreno" dell'azione bellica.
Questo confine ideale è la natura, dove l'anima da Wandervogel dei due giovani è libera di esprimersi nelle pause dalla battaglia, dove per qualche ora il rombo dei cannoni cessa e gli unici suoni a fare da sottofondo alle loro conversazioni sono il canto degli uccelli e il gorgoglio dell'acqua.


Banalizzato come romanzo patriottico, il suo vero fulcro è il cameratismo tra i due giovani, delicato e silenzioso, ma attraverso cui traspare una tensione romantica oltre il velo dell'innocenza.
Sembra quasi che per pudicizia non si voglia scendere più a fondo tutta la narrazione è come sospesa in un sogno, anche quando l'incanto si spezza e la nuda terra accoglie il sangue di Ernst, destinato a sopravvivere nel confine tra i due mondi.
Piccolo libretto scritto da un giovane letterato che partì per il fronte neldescrivendo appunto la sua esperienza di guerra, Il libro pur ponendosi come autobiografia non si sofferma tanto sulla guerra in sé o sul proprio vissuto di Walter Flex, ma su un suo compagno di armi, il sottonenente Wurche, ex studente di teologia conosciuto al fronte che anche in trincea si porta sempre con sé le poesie di Goethe, Così parlò Zarathustra e il Vangelo.
Il libro spesso si lascia andare a descrizioni pompose dai toni romantici del giovane sottonente, soffermandosi sulla sua forza, il suo coraggio, la sua intelligenza e la sua bellezza fisica.
Flex lo vede perpetuamente come un esempio, un eroe mitico i toni usati farebbero inoltre pensare che ci sia stato anche un vero e proprio innamoramento azzarderei quasi a dire, ovviamente taciuto e oscurato dalla situazione e dal contesto storico.
Ironicamente il libro venne rivalutato e ampiamente promosso dalla propaganda nazista il

quale sfruttava l'opera come esempio delle virtù del perfetto soldato tedesco che non ha paura di nulla, incarna lo spirito patriottico e riconosce il cameratismo come valore assoluto contro il nemico.
La società del Terzo Reich non poteva non restare ammaliata da come il giovane Flex e Wurche metta la patria sopra ogni cosa, e dalla sua idealizzazione della guerra e della morte nonché della virilità.
La guerra però come già detto, riveste relativamente poco in questo libro, e solo parzialmente può fungere come documento storico, ma, seppur celate sotto l'ideale romantico nazionalista della retorica dulce et decorum est pro patria mori e dalle connotazioni letterarie, spesso dalle descrizioni degli orrori del fronte emergono sprazzi sinceri della più cruda realtà del conflitto bellico e della vita quotidiana in trincea.
