It's not bad but it's not special, and tbh pretty forgettable, except some of the side characters like Lila was special, and unique as an autistic mother, and Calvin went through interesting challenges and identity seeking I totally thought he and Seth might reconcile in some way but no, Seth is a jerk the whole way through.
The plot and characters are expected, the secret got dragged out for too long imo though of course it is a big weighty thing, and just.
. . it was okay.
Also, if you're into flowers and gardening you might like those references, but didn't do anything for me, Having read KIND OF CURSED first I did notice some similarities, like the main guy works with his hands and in construction/landscaping but managerially and is clearly very smart, and a lot of noticing dimples.
Haha. Great writing and pacing. Great characters except for one part I'll touch on in a moment, I don't think I've ever read a book that had a character with autism and I think Fournet did a great job with Lila, Having an autistic mother clearly made Nate more mature and caring,
Good character development with both families,
Some spoilers past this point,
Really liked Blythe's reaction to finding her brother wearing her top, It showed that she was a caring, good person,
Like so many other books, the losing the virginity scene was not realistic, But I can overlook that,
What I can't overlook and the only thing that prevented me from not giving this book astar rating was how Nate treated Blythe after he found out that she had aborted their child many years
before after he completely abandoned her.
His behavior was unacceptable. I'm glad he quickly realized the error of his ways and of course I wanted a HEA but I wish Blythe had really let him have it and not forgiven him for a very long time.
Also, even if it was not intentional, it seemed that there was a bit of a prolife agenda being communicated, There was absolutely nothing wrong with Blythe's choice and the idea that she was so extremely ashamed bothered me, Six years ago , Nate met Blythe and they had six glorious weeks together where they had a whirlwind romance and loved /lived life to the full and then the Summer came to an end and they were going to try a college romance.
That was until Nate's Dad Richland passed away and things got heated and words chucked around, The pair then went their separate way and years passed, but both Nate and Blythe constantly thought of one another as the one who got away their first true love.
Six years later , Nate is owner of his Dad's landscape business and is a booming business owner atand Blythe after losing her job etc is headed home to live with her parents till she can get back on her own two feet.
One night, the pair run into each other and it's like time never passed in one aspect as they both still love each other so much, the thing is though that they both have changed and Blythe has a dark secret that could ruin everything for the both of them the one reason, she doesn't get close to anyone ever again as she believes she is worthless.
Has Nate and Blythe been given a second chance at love or will Fate play a cruel hand and have Nate walk away a second time around
Butterfly Ginger is told in two tenses the Past Six years ago which leads to the breakup and Present Six years later and alternates between both characters past/present lives.
For those who know me, I am a huge believer in true love and I love nothing more than Second Chance Love Stories as this is a lot closer to home to me than many may realise.
The other thing that I loved about Butterfly Ginger was that Nate's mother had Autism and I have grown up in a household where three of the five members were on the Autism spectrum.
If you are a sucker for an Second Chance at Love HEA , then Flutter away and curl up and read "Butterfly Ginger" by Stephanie Fournet, This second chance at love was a sweet and uplifting read,
I was happy to see that the reason for the spilt wasnt some unforgivable sin, and there were no bad guys in this story, it was just real life.
Stuff happens and people make the best decision they can at the time, and thats what both of the MCs did in this book, They both had to live with the choices that they made and they both regretted some of those choices, I also loved that during their time apart they both still knew how special what they had had been and that when presented with the chance to reconnect, they both communicated openly and honestly even though it hurt.
The author touched on a real life situation that is not often included in todays romances at least not theor so Ive read but, is part of real life nonetheless.
This delicate topic was addressed with sensitivity for what the characters were feeling while touching on some of the deep emotions the circumstances inspired,
Its a delight to read about characters with integrity, honesty, courage, intelligence, and heart, I wish more real people were like Nate and Blythe Id love to have them as friends,
Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of this book as the result of a Goodread giveaway,
This was a good comingofage love story that turned into a second chance romance, Coming from a more mature age than young adult, I thought the author handled the book well she certainly included every angsty problem a young couple could encounter in this story.
I did like Nate as a character his life was torn apart just on the cusp of him going off to college, leaving him to grow up overnight without being ready.
I found I was about a third of the way through the book before realizing you really got to know him better than Blythe in fact, I never really did connect with her as a character it isn't always about you and I think Nate gave up far more without a choice than she did with a choice.
I was glad to see them get a HEA but can't say I was particularly invested in their story, As I said, someone of a younger age might relate better to it,
Wow. . What a wonderfully written story, This book deals with real issues, Issues people dont like to address, but Author Stephanie Fournet did a wonderful job, Immediately, I was brought back to the summer before first semester of college and my first love, Fun and giddy with not a care in the world, We thought we were so cool and could rule the world, We were so blind to the ways of the world and turns out that Nate and Blythe went through their own trials and tribulation together and apart.
It takes them six years to get it together, The author brings you on an emotional roller coaster, I laughed and I cried, Loved Nate and hated him as well as having my doubts about Blythes decisions, But Love rules and always deserves a second chance,. Another well written book by this author! I really love the way she writes her romances the Hs are totally swoonworthy! My only complaint was that this story seemed a bit short and the reasons behind some bad decisions that both the H and h made seemed far fetched.
The Calvin storyline was kind of left wide open too maybe it was to set the stage for another book Will DEFINITELY read more by this author!.
Stars
Super cute book about second chance romance, . . I really liked it but wish there was a little more depth to it, . . It kind of left me hanging with Calvin's side story and the want for more of their HEA rather than how everything came together in the end.
. . But overall I liked Blythe and Nate together, they both sweet and loving, . . This is so sad and emotional and amazing, I couldnt put it down, Seeing this beautiful love story that has so much sadness and lost time is heartwrenching,
Blythe and Nate are so in love and that love doesnt die after six years apart, When these two first meet they have instant attraction and love, they understand each other and dont want to let go, They find a way to be together even after the summer is over, Unfortunately life turns tragic for Nate and in order to allow blythe to live he must let her go, It is like the adage if you love someone set them free, if they love you they will come back if not they never were, Well blythe has something happen after they separate and she makes a decision that burdens her, She has secrets and goes on,
After six years, neither can forget the other, The beauty of their love is stronger than ever and they are perfect for each other, they have guilt and regrets but feel that they shouldnt be together because of them, Nate though cant give up and he is determined to get her again,
What ensues is a beautiful and poignant dance of two lovers reuniting and forgiving, Accept Blythe doesnt tell her secret at first, They are so precious together, Each are kind and gentle, They accept each others flaws, give each other support and strength and have unconditional love, When Blythes brother Calvin is in trouble Nate helps, He accepts no questions asked, This will have you swoon more for him,
When Blythe finally tells her secret, Nate is enraged not because he cant forgive but because she took away something from him, She kept something from him, It is his sweet mom and the nice priest who has him see what Blythe was going through and why she did what she did, this has him go ask for forgiveness and the love they have helps them through it all,
This is the beautfiul heartwarming, heartwrenching story that puts you through an emotional rollercoaster as you are drawn into the lives of Nate and Blythe.
You feel what they do and are privileged to a look at what they are thinking and feeling, You are drawn into seeing them forgive themselves, each other and let love bring them together and stay together, FANTASTIC, light love story written by an author living in Lafayette, Louisiana, Sticks with you after the final page making you sad you finished the book, Being from here, it was fun to see and relate to local places like Deano's, Judice Inn, Hub City Diner and many others, Street names come bouncing at you like St, Mary, University and schools, STM, UL, But if you are not from this area, that's okay, This is a rare good read in the times of Fifty Shades, Nice to get back to simple love no matter what age you are, You must read this!!!! As someone who resolutely avoids romance books, I have to say I've been pleasantly surprised by all three of Stephanie Fournet's novels, Butterfly Ginger is her third, and to me, her most engrossing, Nate and Blythe fell hard and fast for one another during the summer after they graduated high school, As they head off to college with the hopes of staying together, life throws them both of a series of challenges that end up tearing them apart.
Fast forward to six years later, and Blythe is back in her hometown after a disastrous few months leave her with nothing but the option of returning to her parents house to get back on her feet.
Blythe and Nate reconnect with one another, and it doesnt take long for them to admit to themselves that there is still something powerful between them, Both are haunted by mistakes from their pasts, and overcoming the pain, guilt, and regret from their breakup might prove to be too much,
I wasnt expecting to get so emotionally involved in this story, because, as I said before, I normally cant stand romance bookstheyre often too sappy or dull.
The issues between Nate and Blythe really drew me in to where I kept reading “just one more chapter” to find out what would happen next, Id definitely recommended this book to anyone who loves romance, but even more so to people who just want a good, involving story they can get lost in.
