classic devotional for a reason, You get the gospel all the time and in a variety of ways, The topics vary, and it is not repetitive like one devotionals, You cannot go wrong with choosing this classic for your year, This is an excellent devotional that has many nuggets of wisdom inside, It will encourage your heart daily! Keep it near, add it to your daily reading,
Keep it near, add it to your daily reading, It's part of my devotionals,
This is full of gems!!! You will be enriched, This devotional offers short but powerful insights into the Word of God, Especially during those times when it seems like my own connection with the Word is running dry, this has really helped to pick me up and bring me to a place of repentance and restoration to God's grace and the joy of salvation.
Morning amp Evening is perhaps the seminal book Charles Spurgeon's career, Despite how prolific his writings and statements were, this is what folks think of when it comes to a devotional of his, It's one of the bestloved devotional works ever,
Certainly it's easy to see why, I greatly benefitted from the optimism of Spurgeon, None of the negative stuff that so many have at times espoused, Yes, there is suffering, as Spurgeon well knew, but there is also joy,
If it were not for the values dissonance not in terms of morality but in terms of certain activities like recreation being bad or what not this book would have been near perfect.
Great book and I really recommend it,
Rating.Stars. Some days are brilliant, some leave me scratching my head, most are just ok, Never been a devotional guy but this is as good as anything I've found, Truly superb! Spurgeon's language is approachable yet lofty, The daily format is ideal to accomplish a major impact a little at a time on multiple fronts in the reader's life, Spurgeon comes across as insistent on Christ's best for the reader's life but in a jovial, fatherly way that will have the reader looking forward to the next visit.
I have enjoyed reading this over the years, I like to original readings a bit better, I have an app for those, This is an edited version of Spurgeons devotions from thes, A classic loved by scholars and laymen, its one of those devotions that can be used over and over again, And how you use it depends on how much personal devotion time you have carved out of the day for yourself,
To get the full Spurgeon effect, your dose for the day would be reading a pagelong devotion in the morning, another one in the evening, memorizing one Bible text, and reading a significant portion of the Bible towards the goal of reading the entire Bible in a year.
All this is clearly laid out on two facing pages and makes it easy to navigate and pace yourself from Januaryto December, Thats a lot of reading and devotion time for the average person,
If you are already in the habit of spending half hour alone with God at the beginning and end of each day, this is just the book for you.
but if you just want a quick pickmeup with your morning cup of coffee or a pinch of devotion at the long traffic light on your way to work, this is not for you.
By that I mean, its not for you to use every morning and evening with regularity but you can always use a reading whenever you want to be recharged with Gods Word.
Just because these devotions are long and heavy is no reason to disregard them altogether,
If youre the kind that writes notes during your personal devotion, theres ample white space around every reading, But, the pages are so Biblethin that you can only use a pencil or one of those special pens that dont bleed through, My first reaction to the paper was that the booked screamed “cheap,” but then I realized that two fullpage devotions for a full year equalspages which would result in a thick, hardcovered book thats not very portable.
So I can see why New Leaf went with thin pages and a paperback cover, Its a practical choice.
All in all, a great devotional, But I wont be starting it until next yearI got it well into the new year and Im not about to try to catch up a withdays of Spurgeon!
I received this book free from New Leaf Publishing Group.
I was not required to write a positive review, The opinions I have expressed are my own, I bought this version for my wife since english is her second language, Spurgeon's original words are obviously to be preferred over "updated" versions when possible, but this was most readable for her, We haven't actually read the entire year of devotions, but we've read a lot of them, Spurgeon's words are encouraging and speak powerfully into the life of the believer, He lived up to the title "Prince of Preacher", and that shines through in his writing! Though I must admit, his exegesis of the text can be difficult to follow and from time to time rather baffling.
Though, since he was a much more gifted theologian and preacher than I could ever hope to be, I'll chalk it up to my ignorance rather than has capability.
Warmly recommended. While I don't always like updating language from the original author, in this case, they did a fantastic job, Reading again and probably will several more times as I walk this journey it's one of the only devotionals I actually can comfortably recommend, Solid and Biblical. Classic Spurgeon to reflect on daily, This book isn't for everybody, but if you've read quite a bit of the Bible and like beautiful language and thoughts, you might give it a try, Here is the morning reading for Decemberas a sample:
“Hitherto hath the Lord helped us, ”
Samuel:
The word “hitherto” seems like a hand pointing in the direction of the past, Twenty years or seventy, and yet, “hitherto the Lord hath helped!” Through poverty, through wealth, through sickness, through health, at home, abroad, on the land, on the sea, in honour, in dishonour, in perplexity, in joy, in trial, in triumph, in prayer, in temptation, “hitherto hath the Lord helped us!” We delight to look down a long avenue of trees.
It is delightful to gaze from end to end of the long vista, a sort of verdant temple, with its branching pillars and its arches of leaves even so look down the long aisles of your years, at the green boughs of mercy overhead, and the strong pillars of lovingkindness and faithfulness which bear up your joys.
Are there no birds in yonder branches singing Surely there must be many, and they all sing of mercy received “hitherto, ”
But the word also points forward, For when a man gets up to a certain mark and writes “hitherto,” he is not yet at the end, there is still a distance to be traversed, More trials, more joys more temptations, more triumphs more prayers, more answers more toils, more strength more fights, more victories and then come sickness, old age, disease, death, Is it over now No! there is more yetawakening in Jesus likeness, thrones, harps, songs, psalms, white raiment, the face of Jesus, the society of saints, the glory of God, the fulness of eternity, the infinity of bliss.
O be of good courage, believer, and with grateful confidence raise thy “Ebenezer,” for
He who hath helped thee hitherto
Will help thee all thy journey through.
When read in heavens light how glorious and marvellous a prospect will thy “hitherto” unfold to thy grateful eye! I missed some days, but I will likely read through it again this year.
So encouraging. A rich daily devotional. Weve been enjoying reading this together most days, "Morning and Evening" is a yearlong devotional with a devotion provided for both the morning and the evening of each day, The wording has been updated so that the English is easy to understand, Each devotion started with
a verse from the Bible and then had Spurgeon's comments on it or on a related topic, I found a few of the devotions to be insightful, some were interesting, and some seemed to be more of historical interest as none of the churches I've attended have quite so literally interpreted the Song of Solomon as between the church and God.
The devotions were short, so it didn't take long to read or listen to, in this case, as it was an audiobook each devotion, Only took myyears or so, My version was the KJV version,
I haven't read very many devotionals, but this was my favorite drawing my heart to God many times, Through college I read one of these most mornings and some evenings, It really helped keep me focused on what really matters in life, Well written and thoughtprovoking. Morning and Evening is a fantastic devotional for the heart of every believer, I strongly recommend it to anyone who wants to begin and end their day with spiritual encouragement and instruction, Spurgeon, the "prince of preachers" delivers his depth and love for Christ,
