is my favorite memoir of colonial British East Africa, which I first read in, Nellie Grant was Elspeth Huxley's mother, She almost singlehandedly supported her family through hard times in a rough country, She was the model for Tilly, the mother, in The Flame Trees of Thika, A remarkable and delightful woman, This is the story of a remarkable woman who would say she was just like every other woman who went to Kenya in the colonial days, The book is made up of Nellie Grants' letters sent to her daughter Elspeth Huxley with narrative added by both, The daughter grew up in Kenya but left as a young adult, Nellie remained in Kenya, surviving crop failures, drought, attacks by wild animals, locust destroying the crops, fires, disease, She survived the terrifying Mau Mau revolt when people and animals were slashed to death, She was an avid gardener, and when one crop failed she tried another, She was close to the natives and this book helps us learn much about their ways, At the age ofshe semiretired to Portugal where she set out again to be self sufficient, It is a delightful, moving, and inspiring story of a strong woman, A useful source for those interested in the British colonial society in Kenya, The Grants, Nellie and Jos Joscelin, settled in British East Africa before WWI and raised their daughter, Elspeth Huxley, there, Elspeth became a writer, and ultimately produced this account, The first half of the book is narrative of her mother's origins as the daughter of an earl and marriage to Jos Grant, The second half is a collection of Nellie's letters, Nellie Grant was a formidable woman and somewhat more practical than her husband, Farming in East Arica was a difficult proposition, with many failures, Unlike
many settlers, she had an affinity for the natives, establishing a school for the children of the "squatters" who worked on her farm and when she finally retired and moved back to England she arranged for the sell of the farm to them at less than she could have gotten selling to a European.
