don't really see the point of this book, The majority of the content is just writing up content from three websites not written by the authors, The authors add some of their own experiences hearing particular songs, but I didn't find those very insightful,
I guess the best part of the book was explanations about how Dead structured their sets, some terms that Deadheads use when talking about sets and songs, etc.
Sure you could find that in various places online, but it's nice to see it in one place,
Bottom line for me:
Use the headyversions site to find the best versions of songs, as voted by Deadheads
Use David Dodd's Annotated Grateful Dead lyrics site or book to learn more about the songs In the studio and more than, concerts betweenand, the Grateful Dead performed more thandifferent songs.
Their music continues to be tremendously popular as surviving band members and countless tribute bands memorialize the legacy the band left us upon the death of lead guitarist and singer, Jerry Garcia.
The Grateful Dead'sEssential Songs examines the band's remarkable musical journey, pairing song analyses and memories with an online list of recommended recordings, Beyond a mere summary of each song, the descriptions here compare individual performances as they relate to the evolution of the band's style and the waning health but vibrant spirit of Garcia.
Welcoming readers into the unbroken chain of the Dead's legacy, this book is indispensable for Deadheads, students of popular music, rock musicians, and anyone marveling at how the Dead's appeal continues today.
With linked performances and studio recordings to allow readers to listen along with the book, as well as other song analyses and firsthand narratives of the authors' experience at hundreds of Dead concerts, the book will appeal to Deadheads, students of popular music, rock musicians, and anyone marveling at how the Dead's appeal continues today.
The online song list may be accessed under the features tab at https/rowman, com/ISBN/. Given to me by my sister as a Christmas present, I have to admit that, while I thought the book a nice touch, I was a little skeptical about the need for me to read another
book about the Grateful Dead.
Happily, I can say that I was pleasantly surprised and enjoyed this book quite a lot, Yes, MOST of the information in the book was old hat for me, but there was enough new stuff to me to keep things interesting.
Besides, it was fun to learn all the statistics how many times a song was played when it was first and last played, etc.
and see which version were the best in THEIR not so humble opinions, And sometimes while reading the recommendations, I could say, “Hey I was at that show!” That made me feel like Barry and Bob and I shared a special bond!
In addition to the facts and figures, I think they did a pretty good job trying to explain the allure of the band and the hold that the music had on their fans.
It also brought back a lot of fond memories and a desire to reconnect with the music again, In the final analysis I really liked it!
