Campanella loved baseball. A professional player from the age of fifteen, he later became the first AfricanAmerican catcher to integrate Major League Baseball, Fans and players adored Campy for his good nature, and cheered his multiple MVP awards as a Brooklyn Dodger, But in, his career ended when a car accident left him a quadriplegic, Refusing to give in to selfpity, Campy became a Dodgers coach, held baseball clinics for teenagers, and bravely advocated for the disabled, With honesty and affection, awardwinning author David A, Adler tells the storycomplemented by stunning oil paintings by Gordon C, Jamesof a man who was so much more than a sports hero,
When I was younger, I never enjoyed books regarding history, However, if I were to read this book, I believe I would have enjoyed it, This book paints a perfect picture of how life used to be before there wasn't any segregation, It illustrates the struggles of Roy Campanella before he became so successful, It would be a beneficial book to read to a young audience to show them what life used to be like, This book ia great for little children because it talks about a lot of content, Obviously it discusses alot of baseball, But the issue of race is also introduced in this book so children get to see the struggles involved in that, Ordinarily I feel like picture book biographies do better when they get specific, focusing on a part of the person's life, The picture book format isn't always well suited to a beginning to end life story, but here it works, Especially since it is such a multifaceted, interesting life, There are a LOT of picture books about AfricanAmerican pioneers busting the color barriers and while that story is important it is really nice to get a full picture of a person, see that their life was more than that, and who they were.
I also liked the way the book began, it helped the story
unfold very nicely, Really left me wanting to know more about him, and I had never even heard of him before!! I love reading the David Adler books, very easy to read and always interesting.
