Gradually as the violent reality of the occupation that infects both the occupier and the occupied alike merges with the old man's stories, Uri, captivated by Khilmi's wisdom, tries to solve the riddles and deceits that make up his life.

I loved the multiple narrators and their different ways of thinking, I loved the deep symbolism and rich language, It is a story of lives that are torn between dilemmas, instinct, and conscience, The book is heavy and I had to trudge through it, But when I finished reading it, it was rewarding, לוקח זמן להכנס אל תוך הסיפור הוא מסופר מנקודות המבט של ארבעת הדמויות הראשיות, ומלווה אותן במחשבות המפותלות והמסובכות שלהן.

מתוך הסיפור מתפצלים סיפורים קטנים שכל אחד מהם ראוי לרומאן משל עצמו בפרט הסיפור על שעבאן אבן שעבאן הצייד.
ממליץ בחום! I found it hard to follow, I could not always distinguish the different voices of the characters, Most of book is internal thoughts, abstractions, reflections and I found it excessively cerebral all the characters sounded kindof the same to me.

Ik geef zeldensterren omdat ik boeken dan meestal na een pagina ofal op mijn virtuele abandoned plankje heb gezet en in werkelijkheid heb teruggebracht naar de bieb.
Maar dit boek kreeg ik van de Kerstman! Dus wat meer moeite gedaan, Maar qua eindoordeel kom ik niet verder dan,,

Het mooie is wel dat het verhaal in de kern goed is, Gewaagd ook om over de bezette gebieden te schrijven begin jaren, En triest dat de situatiejaar later niets is veranderd, Of zelfs slechter is geworden, Ik ben echter minder enthousiast over de continue stroom van gedachten en de soms lange zinnen, Regelmatig moest ik een stuk opnieuw lezen, Wat staat hier nou eigenlijk Het eerste hoofdstuk zelfs helemaal opnieuw nadat ik een recensie had gelezen waar het een en ander werd uitgelegd.
Een wel heel erg pretentieus boek van een beginnend schrijver, Ik begrijp dat Grossman inmiddels betere boeken heeft geschreven! Tips zijn welkom,

PS. De cover met de citroenboom is een lust voor het oog, Het grote voordeel van gedrukte boeken: het ligt op je tafel, Je kijkt er een hele week naar, Op Goodreads kies ik dan ook altijd de juiste cover omdat er zon sterke koppeling met de inhoud is ontstaan in mijn hoofd.
Zelf aanmaken van edities is helaas niet meer mogelijk, In dit geval uitgeverij Cossee gevraagd dat te doen omdat het gedoe met librarians hier op GR mij totaal onduidelijk is! I've liked other David Grossman better.
I don't like this book,

At first it resembles with A, B. Yehoshua's "The Lover" which I absolutely LOVED, in sampling different characters' perspectives and telling the story in a streamofconsciousness style, unreliable narrators, marital breakdown by cheating but idealistic wives, and threads of psychological disturbances and emotional complexity.
Albeit it sheds interesting points about modern Israeli society such as tensions between Ashkenazim and Sephardim, But this story is abstract in the nonsensical way that it gets in the way of relating to the reader.
It's a little "selfish", more like a writer/characters' way of mental masturbation by spewing out their notions than truly engaging the reader.
I feel ignored. I had a big feeling of deja vu when I read this, Did I already read this book Not a good sign that I couldn't remember,

Anyway, interesting, intriguing, tremendous writing, but filled with people overanalyzing everything, It got tiresome, to be honest, Noch ein Buch das ich mehrfach begonnen habe und jetzt ungeachtet eventueller Lobpreisungen ungelesen aussortiere, No me ha gustado, es una realidad,
Más allá de mis discrepancias con el conflicto palestinoisraelí que las hay, no lo voy a negar el libro en sí, pese a ser corto, me ha resultado denso, cansado y difícil.
Tiene una manera de narrar muy peculiar que hace que se te mezclen las voces narrativas y que te pierdas.
Era difícil de seguir y era demasiado complejo, como si sólo tuviera sentido en algunos momentos, Además de ese estilo, encima no es una historia ágil, va muy lenta, y los motivos y argumentos que se tratan en ella están opuestos a cualquier valor que yo respeto.
Lo que lo hacía aún más difícil,

A parte de los constantes momentos de superioridad israelí y de querer victimizar a la población hebrea al mismo nivel de la palestina lo siento, por mucho que haya culpa en ambos bandos no me parece que un país desarrollado, reconocido, con un PIB de la hostia, con gobierno fijo y ayuda internacional pueda "compararse" en absoluto con Palestina, es que me parece incluso ofensivo, es que además encima había argumentos y pasajes en que no entendías ni a los protagonistas.
No entiendo a dónde quiere llegar el autor y qué quiere contar exactamente, Ya no sólo porque yo tengo una mirada sesgada en este conflicto, sino como historia en sí, Una vez terminado sigo sin ver qué quiere decir Grossman y cuál es el motivo de la historia.


Tampoco encuentro que haya un inicio, ni un final, No lo he entendido. No he conectado. No creo que la construcción de personajes esté bien hecha, y además el estilo dificulta más aún que entiendas las voces narrativas y te acerques a los personajes.


Sin duda la peor lectura del marzoasiatico, This is an early Grossman book, and in my opinion not as good as his later creations,

This is quite a challenging book, like all of Grossman's books, The narrative is told from four points of view, and as usual with Grossman, there is a dark secret for each of the characters which we discover as we read the book.
The book is told much from the thoughts and deliberations of the characters, sometimes even in a a streamofconsciousness style, much less with things that happen.
There is little plot and much more an unfolding of a puzzle, which is where Grossman's genius shows, However, as some of the thoughts became loose and repetitive, I found that my mind also often wondered and I could barely keep my eyes open.
In the end it took me more than a week to read a book which I would usually read in an afternoon or two.
I'm not saying the effort was not worth it, but I think Grossman, while never becoming an easy read, had later leaned how to keep me, as a reader, more interested.
I also did not get the strong feeling of elation that Grossman's later works gave me,

If one is looking to taste Grossman's work I'd easily recommend his latest works such as his masterpiece sitelinkA Horse Walks into a Bar.
Otherwise, this is more for someone who, like myself, is curious about Grossman's early works, Three out of five, Finalmente ripubblicato in una nuova edizione, Il sorriso dell'agnello è effettivamente il primo romanzo di David Grossman, Siamo nel lontano, ma già di Grossman c'è molto, a cominciare dal primo dei quattro protagonisti, Uri, il giovane soldato idealista, che porta il nome del figlio prediletto di Grossman e che tante pene gli farà soffrire.

Quattro dunque sono i protagonisti di questo romanzo, una scelta inusuale che difficilmente Grossman ripeterà, preferendovi il dominio di un solo e solitario punto di vista accanto a Uri si muove la moglie Shosh, psicanalista in crisi in seguito al suicidio di un suo giovane paziente il comandante Katzman, amico e collega di Uri, sopravvissuto all'Olocausto infine il vecchio Khilmi, un cantastorie arabo che soffre la perdita del figlio terrorista.
