synopsis: the Bobbsey Twins want to go to summer camp, Their father and mother rent a house on Indian Lake and create a summer camp for the four children and four of their friends,
Published in, The Bobbsey Twins at Indian Hollow is racismfilled glimpse into what was once viewed as normal, Not only does Dinah, their black livein woman, speak in dialect "Dese here chilluns, . . ", there is also a tribe of painfullydepicted Native Americans and an Italian bear trainer,
The Native Americans are stereotypical, of course, but they seem to be plucked from theth century, They have names like Running Deer, wear buckskin, ride horses through the middle of town, think having their pictures taken will cause plague, believe in evil spirits, and barely speak English "We go help white man.
White man nice. " Also, they appear to be cobbled together by iconic images of tribes from all over the US totem poles, wigwams, corn bread, Not only that, they view their old pottery as worthless and can't wait to give away their treasured items so the children can take them home and put them in their school museum.
The Italian bear trainer was something else, too, "You likea my beara!"
I also absolutely loathe Mrs, Bobbsey. She doesn't work, she doesn't cook, she doesn't clean, and she doesn't take care of the children, Yet, she's glad that Cousin Ken is going to come be a counselor at the camp, because now maybe she'll get to enjoy her vacation.
WHAT WOMAN, WHAT EXACTLY DO YOU DO, THAT YOU NEED A VACATION FROM When I exclaimed this out loud, my husband responded, "correspondence, "
Again, I did try to keep in mind that this was written inand apparently written foryearolds seriously, the language is incredibly babyish.
But even with that in mind, I had a hard time finding anything really of value in this book, the children are goidy twoshoes, except they get into a LOT of mischief, and even bully others, and it's all viewed as cute and acceptable, because these are our main characters! If they're jerks, it's because someone else is a bigger jerk, and they're just giving them some of their own medicine! Drama occurs practically every other paragraph.
I really enjoyed the Bobbsey Twins when I was younger, but had never read this before, I wonder if By the Seashore is just as awful, Laura Lee Hope is a pseudonym used by the Stratemeyer Syndicate for the Bobbsey Twins and several other series of childrens novels, Actual writers taking up the pen of Laura Lee Hope include Edward Stratemeyer, Howard and Lilian Garis, Elizabeth Ward, Harriet Stratemeyer Adams, Andrew E, Svenson, June M.
