title, average story. For ayearold, Nettie was pretty immature, I get that she was sheltered and naive, but the way she spoke and acted was more in line with anyearold, This was in the teen section of my library, probably for the content human trafficking, but the writing style felt more aimed at primary school children.
I couldn't believe that Mr Roberts the robber baron of the title would employ one of his trafficked girls as a tutor for his precious daughter.
Why would you ever allow the two halves of your life to overlap like that It also seemed strange that the "ghost" in the house turned out to be a real boy when so many people had no idea of his existence and thought Nettie and her GreatAunt were imagining things.
And surely if you were the teenage son of the security guard you would know better than to pull stupid pranks every day like constantly moving people's belongings I was just waiting for him to be discovered and for his dad to lose his job over it.
Nettie lives the life of a modern day princess with her billionaire parents: holidays around the world, her own pony, servants and a huge mansion.
Her only regret is not having any friends of her own age, But the sudden disappearence of her beloved tutor Miss Kurachov begins to open her eyes to the dark secrets behind her seeming perfect world, What exactly does her father do on his many business trips Who is the small 'ghost' who flits around the shadows of the house Why won't anyone tell her where Miss Kurachov has gone The answers will force her to make a frightening choice about her life.

I bought this book after attending a reading by its author Jamila Garvin, An impressive childrens' novel that combines traditional adventure elements secret passages, overheard criminals, starting a new school, with the very modern evil of human trafficking.
Nettie is a believable heroine, inquisitive but vulnerable and her friend Bobby is a good schoolboy protagonist, The sequences depicting the journey of a young woman from Bulgaria to the UK are sensitively written, harrowing but not too explicit for young readers.
The book keeps you guessing as to how it will end and the final chapter is satisfying, A good example of how to write a real world children's novel that stays gripping rather than preachy, Recommended, especially for female readers, pure nostalgia It took mepages for me to really get into this book, The only reason I kept reading was because it was an easy book to read, and I needed to add another book to my year's goal list.
It shouldn't have taken mepages to get to the good parts, I was also very confused timelinewise, in the firstpages, as to what was going on when, By the end I sort of understood, but I didn't like having to wait until the very end to understand it all,

Over all, though, I liked the dark topic of the novel, but I felt the blurb on the back didn't do such a great job explaining that this would be a real life dark theme.
I was imagining something a little more fantaslike, especially with the mentioning of a "ghost" in the beginning of the novel,

It had a great premise, but I thought it could have been carried out a little better, Of course, I'm also reading this from a writer's perspective, and I've got a cold, so how much those two things affect my reading of it, I'm not sure.
Maybe others liked it better than I did, Who knows. This was the first YA adult book I had read in the last couple of months, The subject matter was most intriguing and the style and quality of writing was good, I did find some of the plot twists slightly clunky and the main character Nettie appeared to be an exceptionally immature girl, I understand that she had led a privileged and sheltered life however she seemed to lack the ability to question anything, In the midst of her life being "shattered" she still found plenty of time to worry about her ballet dancing,

I would certainly try another of Jamila Gavin's books as this one had real promise but didn't quite do it for me, However I am not the target age group so perhaps if I were twelve the issues with Nettie would not seem so clear, My Rating :.

'I couldn't look into your trusting face each day knowing I was deceiving you, knowing that I now had enough knowledge to destroy your home, and the mother and father you loved.
I was a coward, Nettie, I ran away'

This line especially really made me feel and i almost cried, almost, This book follows out main characters Nettie and her tutor Miss Kovachev, who disappeared leaving Nettie wondering, . It has alternating point of views, which is not mentioned explicitly, so it can get pretty confusing at some places,

Trigger Alert : This books deals with illegal immigration and abusive relationship, If you are easily triggered/offended by them, please don't read this book,

I started reading this book with different expectations after reading about mystery disppearences and ghosts, But The story line was pretty simple but i felt that the characterization could have been a little more detailed and clear, It was kind of a drag at the beginning and i had a difficult time trying to go through, The alternative point of view between two characters were good, but very confusing if you are not keen, In few places i was wondering what was happening and couldn't grasp the picture of what the author was trying to explain,

Apart from that, the way Nettie grows as a person and learns to differentiate between the actual reality and said reality is really good.
The friendship she has with the bubbly and daring Benny, her relationship with her tutor, were all beautiful, It dealt with real world problems about making friends, coping up in an odd environment where everyone sees you as an outcast were true to the words.
I really loved the bond between Nettie and her Great Aunt, and their conversations were always giving hope and dreams to Nettie, But i absolutely loved the ending and how Nettie accepts her for who she is and grows emotionally,

I would have enjoyed this book more if the point of views were clear and the characterization were done more in detail, Though i loved the concept of the book, i don't think it was the one for me, If you are looking for a simple and light read about how a child copes with the changes in her life with lot of truth coming out of hiding because of her loneliness and curiosity, this can be a book for you! I was hooked to the story, and I loved the vivid descriptions.
Great execution and seasoned with life lessons, This book potrays a good story of borgeois versus proletariat, immigrant, and innocence, With small twist in the end, I think this goes out for those in need to read something easy but with some sort of thrill along the way.
From the dark of the Bulgarian underworld to the grandeur of central London, what you don't know can't harm you, Or so Nettie believes. Nettie lives a privileged life in a mansion and she is
