Catch Kissing In Iceland Illustrated By Eliza Locke Expressed As Print
won this book and was totally stoked! I have read but not studied and analyzed yet and so far, so good, I love poetry and would def recommend, I will comment further when I go back and reread,
Sorry for the short review, but my life is a lot crazy right now and I want to give the full attention the collection deserves, The title may sound a bit sentimental, but "Kissing in Iceland" is actually far from gushing, Contained within this brief book from Eliza Locke are indeed poetic tales of travel and romance however, be the setting Charlestown or Stockholm, the travel itself is overall irrelevant and clouded in correlation to each narrative prosepoem, and the romance is oftentimes amoral and detached rather than sweet and overbearing.
Much in the fashion of a collection such as Christy Leigh Stewart's "Loath Letters," "Kissing in Iceland" presents bitter honesty without pleading for understanding all the while, With every glimpse into the lives of those who live in order to remember or forget or deny or justify, there is always some sort of inspiration to be found, and Kelly Carmody's minimalistic drawings highly complement this inspiration.
First of all I adore the illustrations, Their simplicity and sadness so nicely echo the dark things expressed in these poems, I think the book would be seriously different and lacking without them,
I am not a poetry savant, I am one of those people who immediately things of something that rhymes and is short, More trivial and meaningless. Not that poems have nothing to say I just have always been of the naive opinion that poems are too short to have time to express any true deep meaning really only concluding I am far too wordy.
These poems are dark and beautiful, They are striking and in certain instances disturbing, Not in a "wow, I must put down the book" way but in a pleasant way that makes your heart feel for the narrator and feel a closeness to their pain.
It changed part of my perspective on poetry and in a great way making want to seek more and dive into a world of reading and writing I have previously neglected.
Sorry
I forgot to mention that I received this book from a First read giveaway! I found the poems in this book very interesting and I liked the themes and ideas that Eliza Locke used.
I am not fond of 'long' poems that go on for pages and pages, so I enjoyed these, which were short and to the point,
The poems all read well and many are very thoughtprovoking,
A nice collection for fans of modern poetry,
Free copy won through Goodreads First Reads, Love in various forms dominate this poetry collection although other subjects are covered, Yes, there are some dark poems here, There are sensuous, erotic ones as well as light love poems, too, Interspersed between some of the poems are drawings and sketches which enhance them, A personal favorite is "The Softest Breeze Is You, " "Sometimes you read poetry. And sometimes you're struck by it, Warm words describe cold subjects in Kissing in Iceland, where the darker side of life and love are presented in Eliza Locke's brilliant writing style, She gives us glimpses into a world we may never actually visit, but will surely feel as if we've been there, It's beautiful and cutting and edgy, with illustrations by Kelly Carmody that are powerfully subtle, " Lucy Spinetti, Boston Literary Magazine I won this book from Goodreads and I enjoyed it very much as it is the same dark poetry style that my daughter loves to write.
I think this type of romantic writing is much more true then the gushing styles that are so prevalent in romantic poetry, I would recommend this to anyone who's had a broken heart! Just finished reading it and i gotta say i loved it because it was simple, original and passionate.
Great book! I won in goodreads giveaway, It was written with a dark perspective on romance, The dark places some of have been to and the places we will all go to if we are to experience love and romance, I won this book from goodreads first reads, thinking it would be more about the landscape of Iceland due to its description and despite its title, But I was sadly mistaken, I did not follow the imagery of the poems and it was possibly over my head, Usually, poetry is not the kind of literature that I am used to reading, Won this book in a good reads giveaway and from the first look, I must admit that I fell in love with the illustrations, With very few lines drawing a complete picture: I find that awesome,
I liked it that the book I received was signed by the author :
About the poems later more, They ask for more than just a good glance,
Finally I got to reading the poems, The title Kissing in Iceland was misleading to me, I expected more about Iceland / travelling,
I think the poetry in this book was kind of raw, unpolished in terms of choice of words, It differs very much from the poetry I was used to reading when in grammar school, that had rhyme, rhythm, a kind of decipherable strangeness,
While trying to read it as poetry, I failed, did not really get what I was reading, Since there was hardly any rhyme, I decided to treat it more like a short story, That was better, although I do not like the language used, ad I said before, Poetry is such a personal form of writing that it is difficult to review, As opposed to reviewing the content as I would a novel, I will review Kissing in Iceland for the emotions it evoked, My favorite poem is in the Reykjavik section called Snow Days, The words formed pictures and made me smile, Many others in this collection brought feelings ranging from angst to joy, I enjoyed this reading experience, Eliza Locke is the author of Kissing In Iceland, a collection of poetry first published as a chapbook inthrough Big Table Publishing, Kissing In Iceland features the drawings of award winning artist, sitelink Kelly Carmody, Eliza is also the author of The Tree Angel, a story of hope, generosity, and redemption, and is suitable for childrenand up, The Tree Angel is illustrated by artist sitelink Gabriel Bishop, For information on Elizas work, please visit her website at sitelink Eliza Locke is the author of Kissing In Iceland, a collection of poetry first published as a chapbook inthrough Big Table Publishing.
