Secure The University Of Notre Dame: A Portrait Of Its History And Campus Authored By Thomas J. Schlereth Accessible In Edition
A good read for the history of the University, It helped me tons when I was working on my lakes project at ND, Prof. Schlereth is also really helpful to speak to, My meeting with him was extremely helpful, He is a really intelligent and approachable man, This book should be given to every member of the Notre Dame "family," that is, the faculty, administration, and staff.
It is not only beautifully written, it also uncovers a narrative that is barely heard anymore, about a humble school set up to serve the local childrenof the French Catholic and Irish canal and railway workers, and the children of the local Potawatomi tribe.
The school played a huge role in allowing generations of children to learn to read and master a trade, here in South Bend, IN.
The history of Notre Dame since those humble origins is a fascinating read, and Schlereth is a learned, engaging guide.
