The third title in Joosses series about Annaan effusive, adventurous nineyearoldAnna and the Cat Lady tells the story of Annas friendship with an unusual elderly neighbor, Mrs.
Sarafiny. After Mrs. Sarafiny rescues Anna and her best friend, Bethie, from an abandoned house and then takes in Annas adopted kitten, the girls form a deep bond with the older woman.
As they slowly begin to realize that Mrs, Sarafiny is suffering from a severe mental illness eventually identified as paranoid schizophrenia, they take on increasingly large responsibilities in order to care for their friend.
But when Mrs. Sarafiny puts herself in danger, the girls realize that they have no choice but to enlist the help of their parents.
Here is a wellintentioned title that is certainly showing its age, It reads like a prototypical realistic adventure novel for middlegrade readers from the earlys which, of course, it is.
It features all the typical conventionssibling rivalries, a secret club, and fears of parents divorcethough these seem rather tame by todays standards.
Beyond the novels age, however, are some deeper concerns, The books portrayal of mental illness is extremely stereotypical and negative: both Annas family members and Anna and Bethie themselves use the word “crazy” to describe Mrs.
Sarafiny, and Annas parents forbid her from spending time with Mrs, Sarafiny, although they clearly do not know the older woman, Moreover, the description of Mrs, Sarafinys treatment for schizophrenia serves to minimize the perceived severity of this mental illness, While, as the School Library Journal review reports, “Mrs, Sarafiny is taken to a hospital for a quick fix of medication and readers are led to believe that she will be as good as new,” those familiar with mental illness will immediately realize that she will require significantly more attention than is indicated in the book.
Although the characters of Anna and Mrs, Sarafiny are compelling, this title will likely be of little interest to modern readers, This is probably for the best, as its troubling stereotypes and inaccurate depiction of the treatment for schizophrenia make it valuable only as a relic of the past.
Listed as QA good story with some faults, PA booktalk on this title will excite most peoples interest Dan dapat pula lanjutannya Ceritanya tidak saling terkait dengan buku pertama.
Tapi, apalah artinya pendapat masyarakat!
. When nineyearold Anna rescues a stray kitten, it leads her into friendship with Mrs, Sarafiny, an eccentric old woman with many cats and a paranoid conviction that the Martians are after her.
