really enjoyed the story, It was a little difficult to immerse myself in the beginning, because the first chapters were only about elaborate introductions to the characters and how they were as people.
The actual story started quite later in the book and once I reached that part, I was in for a ride and the story grasped me in.
As much as I enjoyed the story, I really disliked the narrator, She was: shallow and materialistic, selfsih and a narcissit, petty and vain and oh so ego driven, I get that there are a lot of people out there myself included that are overachievers, but I have never such deep emotions warring within them that they wish for their best friends to die, just because they always have it easy.
I think it is necessary to appreciate and be a part of ones achievements especially ones you claim to care about, even when you long to achieve the very same goals.
That being said, the rest of the group the othermembers were no less in vain, Ugh, each and everyone of them was selfish and petty, They call themselves a band of best friends who couldn't stand each other in secret, Not one character was good enough to relate to them, But I liked Coop most of all, because at least he was one person, who openly told and showed he was not all that good to begin with.
He never once sugarcoated or adapted himself to be anything other thanhimself, unlike the rest of them, I especially hated Heather and Mint, Anyway, me feeling all these emotions only mean that the author did a fantastic job in writing her characters so well, to make me as a reader feel revulsion towards them.
I look forward to reading stories and plot twists from this author, :D Just wow! This is one of my favourite reads of the year so far, Its dark, its juicy, its intriguing, I wanted to get to the end to find out who the killer was but also, did not want the book to end! So bittersweet.
The setting of Duquette College was immediately giving me Pendleton College from Urban Legend vibes, I was immersed in this dark, gothic, atmospheric location that was tumbling into Dark Academia territory, The intricacies of the relationships between the characters was addictive, particularly between the East House, I was invested in Jessicas decisions and her complicated character, in the secrets each friend kept hidden, More serious subject matter is covered aswellwho we present to the world is not always who we really are, When books explore the darker side of human nature, for me, that is perfection, I used to love the Final Friends Trilogy as a teen and this was like a glorious, grown up version.
Six Friends. One college reunion. One unsolved murder. In My Dreams I Hold A Knife is a debut by Ashley Winstead that seriously packs a punch! This book had all the elements which I love and I was completely absorbed and devoured it.
But not too quickly because I wanted to savour all the juicy details, The college setting/reunion, dual time lines and characters which you kind of hate but love at the same time, plus an unsolved murder winner for me.
As with all “hyped” books I avoided reading reviews or the synopsis when I got the book and just went in blind so I had no expectations.
And I loved it! If youre a fan of dark academia, plenty of drama and a layered story which peels away beautifully with each page, give this a read.
I seriously had a book hang over after this one, This was a perfect summer read!!!!! This was one of my most anticipated reads of this year, I couldn't wait to get my hands on it after seeing some bookstas raving enthusiastically about it, I have to say that I was not disappointed, If you love academic thrillers, you can't miss out on this one, I loved the dual timeline which is very well done in this book as we follow the reunion of former college friends minus a dead one today and the story of what really happened ten years ago.
First of all thank you mariesembar for buddy reading this with me and explaining everything I needed to know about sororities and US colleges.
I would have been lost without you,  We follow Jessica Miller who is determined to steal the show from everyone at her reunion with her once closest friends at the elite Duquette University.
Today she is a successful woman, well dressed and nothing like the lost girl she once was when her roommate Heather was murdered and her life sealed forever.
At the time, everyone was sure that Jack, Heather's boyfriend, was responsible for the murder, but the police could never find any evidence.
When the group is unexpectedly confronted by Eric, Heather's brother, who is still looking for answers, it quickly becomes clear that each of them had the means and motives to kill poor Heather.
So, if Jack is innocent, what really happened that nightI wouldn't classify it as a locked room mystery, but even without Eric's accusations, it's clear from the start that one of thesepeople must be Heather's killer.
Trying to figure out who is telling the truth and who is weaving a lie is what sucks the reader in.
I couldn't quite give itbecause the characters' voices seemed very childish to me, Even though they were now in their thirties, their voices and behaviour felt like that of a teenager, But a part from that, this was a solid thriller which I can only recommend, When six close friends reunite at their ten year collage reunion, hosted by the brother of one of their friends who was brutally murdered back in their college days, relationships and loyalties are tested, old
