full length histories of Ukraine have really been excersises in Nationalistic ie anti Russian narrative or at best accounts conentrating on Ukrainian speaking regions only.
Paul Magosci's book is one of the first to treat the history of all the peoples living within the present day borders of Ukraine.
It is a second and very fully revised editionof hiswork and incorporates a lot, though not all, of the findings of recent scholarship.
An interesting feature is the inclusion of the contrasting "viewpoints" of Russian, Polish, Ukrainian and Soviet historians of the meaning of Ukraine, which for much of human history has not formed a state or polity.
This is fairly presented though I think the author's own opinions are pretty clear, I am still not convinced by the "Ukrainian" version of East Slav history, Even though it now needs some modifying, I think the traditional Russian account is closer to the facts of history.
But let that lie. Magosci begins in the classical period and ends in the early twenty first century but he rightly concentrates most of the narrative on events post.
Very effective is his handling of the confused end of the seventeenth century, He is also very good on the Jewish side of Ukrainian history and on Ukrainian/Ruthenian identity within the Austrian Empire.
I have a few criticisms, Twice Magosci mentions the problem of Christianization and pagan survivals, He seems unaware of the masterly work of Stella Rock "Popular Religion in Russia Double Belief and the Making of an Academic Myth" London, which has overturned a lot of careless thinking on this problem.
Similarly, he repeats the legend that Grigory Potemkin errected sham towns in his conquered territory, This calumny was fully exposed in the biography by Sebag Montefiore, "Prince of Princes the Life of Potemkin" London,pp.
Two very important studies unfortunately appeared too late for Magosci's consideration, They are: Sophia Senyk's second volume of her "History of the Church in Ukraine" Rome,a magnificent study which is much pessimistic about Rus cultural life inth andth century Lithuania than is Magosci, and the equally important work

onth century Crimea by Mara Kozelsky, "Christianizing Crimea" DeKalb, Illinois,A useful, extensive history.
Un libro hecho con rigor y extenso sobre la historia de Ucrania, Muy recomendable para todos aquellos que quieran conocer la historia y evolución de este país, This excellent book is a must for any one who wants to study the history of Ukraine in detail, Having read the entire work, I was shocked to see no mention anywhere of the Tryzub, which appeared on coins as early as theth century, has been considered a national symbol since, and is the Coat of Arms of Ukraine since.
Also, Magocsi is unjustifiably partial to Christianity referring to it as a " advanced religion" in spite of consistently chronicling the detrimental effect it had on the common people, displacing traditional folklore and customs, concentrating wealth on the extensive monastic land holdings, and causing internecine strife with neighbouring countries.
First published in, A History of Ukraine quickly became the authoritative account of the evolution of Europes second largest country.
In this fully revised and expanded second edition, Paul Robert Magocsi examines recent developments in the countrys history and uses new scholarship in order to expand our conception of the Ukrainian historical narrative.
New chapters deal with the Crimean Khanate in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and new research on the pre historic Trypillians, the Italians of the Crimea and the Black Death, the Karaites, Ottoman and Crimean slavery, Soviet era ethnic cleansing, and the Orange Revolution is incorporated.
Magocsi has also thoroughly updated the many maps that appear throughout, Maintaining his depiction of the multicultural reality of past and present Ukraine, Magocsi has added new information on Ukraines peoples and discusses Ukraines diasporas.
Comprehensive, innovative, and geared towards teaching, the second edition of A History of Ukraine is ideal for both teachers and students.
