one took me a long time to get through, even having read it before, even knowing it was the end of the series, The main character's life for the first approx,/of the book or more is just so bloody painful to read, I understand the plot reason's for it, but it really is just not enjoyable to read about someone so tortured and selfabsorbed, I kept having to put down due to the intense desire to slap him, Fortunately, amnesia turns out to be a cure for being a jerk in some cases, A nice ending to a fantastic series, It ended with closure and all questions answered, Kellin is the last chain the the ProphecyAidan and Shona's son, Resentful of Aidan for abandoning him, Kellin lives to rebel, He also has a fear of the Lion, When he loses close friends to Ihlini treachery and Cheysuli custom, he vows to never bond with a lir, Sima, his black mountain cat, has other plans, however, When an accident leaves him with no memory, he ends up in the care of Ginevra, Lochiel's daughter, Thinking him Ihlini, she falls in love with him, and him with her, She defies her heritage to save him and kills Lochiel to save herself and her unborn sonthe Firstborn, The Lion Throne comes to life to become Cynric's lir, And so concludes the last volume of the Chronicles of the Cheysuli series, . . It is a bittersweet ending all the more so since in the authors note, Roberson hints that maybe some day she will return to writing about this land and these terrific characters.
But, it has been over twenty years since that note, so a return hardly seems likely, Still, I will be keeping my fingers crossed that some day she will add perhaps Cynrics story to the canon,
Killons and Ginevras story does make for a fulfilling conclusion though, Like so many of the other novels, it is fastpaced and quite thrilling, Killon is not my favorite character of the series, but he is relatively sympathetic and Ginevra is definitely likable, The pages literally fly by though this is the longest installment in the series,
I have really enjoyed rereading this series, There are more complex and detailed fantasy worlds out there, but this one makes me quite nostalgic, Roberson has a skill in creating likable characters and convincing relationships between them, The writing itself improves with each novel, and the series contains some of my favorite characters in fiction, Im sad to see it end, . . See my review of the first book, Shapechangers, a great story of love and changes with in a series of books that is amazing in its writing and demonstration Nearly a century has passed since the Prophecy of the Firstborn was set in motionthe generational quest to recreate the magical race which once held sway in the lands ruled by Homana's Mujar.
Now, Kellin, heir to Homana's throne, has only to sire an offspring with an Ihlini woman to reach this goal, But Kellin wants nothing of prophecy, nor even of his own magical heritage, Embittered by tragedy, he refuses the sacred lirbonding, becoming anathema in the eyes of his Cheysuli kin, But willing participant or not, Kellin provides a very real threat to the Ihlinithe ancient enemies of the Cheysuli peoplefor should the prophecy be fulfilled, life as the Ihlini know it will end.
How can a lirless warrior ever hope to escape the traps of the Ihlini sorcerers And how can the prophecy ever be realized when the man born to become its final champion shuns his destined role The best ending to the amazing story.
So unexpected An interesting hero. A fitting end to the series, Yet again the current person following his destiny Kellin has to go through some difficult times, It seems to be a fantasy trope that main characters have to go through some events that could be soul destroying, Again,
a series I was completely hesitant to take on, . . specially after having loved the Dragonlance charcters so much, . . I never thought I would care again, . . but there you go. Great series. The Chronicles of the Cheysuli series is the first fantasy epic I read, In fact, it's one of the few series I read repeatedly, likely due to my young age and limited literary horizons,
Nevertheless, these books shaped my first views on philosophy, religion, sexuality, racism, and sexism, The responsible way Roberson handles these issues is inspiring and commendable,
On returning to read these books in later years, some of the characters and plot devices appear hackneyed and cliched, and some of themes aren't exactly as I remember them.
But still, these stories provided the scaffolding on which I built my literary future, Strongest book of the series, one that I eagerly awaited, Kellin amp Ginevra's story is filled with heartache, struggle, and ultimately triumph in the fulfillment of the prophecy, Over ayear career so far, Jennifer Roberson has published four fantasy series, including the Sword Dancer Saga, Chronicles of the Cheysuli, the Karavans universe, and urban fantasy series Blood Bone.
Other novels include historicals LADY OF THE GLEN, plus two Robin Hood novels, LADY OF THE FOREST, and LADY OF SHERWOOD, New novels are percolating in her always active imagination, Hobbies include showing dogs, and creating mosaic and resin artwork and jewelry, She lives in Arizona with a collection of cats and Cardigan Welsh Corgis, .
