is the first book in Mr, Alexanders new series Scandalous Whispers of the Remington Realm, I have to admit that if you try to understand the genders in this book using reality as your frame of reference then you will get very confused.
However, as soon as you suspend reality, and journey back in time in an alternate reality, everything starts to become clearer,
The genders in this book are simply fascinating, individuals with either a penis or vagina can become pregnant and give birth to children.
The outwardly visible genitalia is not indicative of whether or not child bearing organs are present,
By creating this entirely unique world, the Remington Realm, Mr, Alexander is able to explore the topics of transgenderism and gender fluidity, I found it very interesting that while there are “gay” or “lesbian” couples using our definitions, a true homosexual relationship is not accepted in this society.
I wonder if this is an issue that Mr, Alexander will explore in his later books in this series, One of the things I like most about Mr, Alexanders books is his ability to create a world that allows us to reexamine our preconceived ideals by presenting social issues in truly unique ways.
He gives names, faces, and emotions to social/ political issues and allows you to experience them in a way you may not have previously even imagined.
I loved the characters in this book, Heath and Lucien make such a beautiful couple both physically and emotionally, I thoroughly enjoyed their journey to finding love and acceptance in each other, Even the supporting characters in this book seem to be flawed, broken, or disadvantaged in one way or another, I am looking forward to watching all of them find their soul mates and begin the healing process,
Enjoyable read but it just got too confusing with the "lady" and "lord" titles not being tied to an obvious sex but to the sexual capabilities of the person.
Since that is not something easily apparent things can be too confusing,
I liked the premise that children can be born to both women and men, but the confusion of the titles got in the way of my enjoyment.
I loved this book and I want more, I loved the world and the people, I know I'm loving a book when I'm not reading the book and I'm thinking about the it, Also this book has mpreg which I love I really enjoy Vicktor Alexander's writing, I'm also waiting for another book in this world, It can't come soon enough, I thought the world was really interesting, I found a society based on sexual identity not being directly related to physical genitalia fascinating, I liked that, but I had so much trouble wrapping my brain around it, This was so much like a classic hetero regency novel, The women were just as repressed, it didn't matter if the woman has a vagina or if he has a cock, If you're a woman in this world, you take the traditional role of wife/mother/homemaker, It irks me het regency, and it irked me in this one as well, At first, it seems there would be more freedom, but that is an illusion, Relationships between two men are illegal, and relationships between two women are illegal,
The beginning of this book was fascinating and pulled me in, I really enjoyed it at first, but then it stalled out and became pretty boring, The constant introduction of new characters who really didn't matter at all was confusing, Meeting that many people was just too much especially when you're trying to keep the physical sex as well as their sexual identity straight, Way too many people!
I need to expand on the flow of the plot, It wasn't just that it stalled out around themark, It also had some odd things thrown in, which didn't make a whole lot of sense, There were some overly dramatic scenes used to bring Lucien and Heathcliff together, The characters were interesting and the plot entertaining, I enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the next one,
The technicalities of mpreg required a little extra suspension of disbelief, Especially the way "male women " impregnate their spouses, That was just ewww! Thank his there were no sex scenes of that! But overall, I went along with it,
The one thing that made my head explode is keeping track of the pronouns, There were new titles made up for "male women" for sired children and "female men" who bore children, Other than that it was he/she and Lady/Lord, And keeping track of that was a pain in the arse, I would have rather the author came up with words than try to keep track of Lady Charles, who was a woman but was referred to as he.
Ugh. If that could be fixed reading the book would be easier,
Because of the pronouns, I'd give this book a,, but I really did enjoy it so rounded to, Historical novels, and Regency romances in particular, are not my usual kind of literature, Yet I have read enough of them to know what a Regency romance feels like, and this novel is, in many respects, a perfect example of that genre.
And yet, it is also very different, For one thing, it is set in an alternate reality where most of the historical facts ofare the same as in our reality, but while the role of women is exactly as limited and oppressed as it used to be in “our”, the rest of society and most interpersonal conditions are somewhat different.
As concepts for alternate realities go, this one is pretty unique and I enjoyed the book immensely for precisely that reason,
Please find my full review of the second edition on sitelinkRainbow Book s,
Hmm. This was a weird book, I enjoyed it a lot because it is very much like the m/f regency romances I like to read but with two men instead.
Yet it was weird.
The renaming of realworld countries, races, etc was unnecessary, Just adding a T to "american, african, london, etc" and changing English to Anglish was, frankly, silly, But then again, I also happen think a certain popular series which has heroes named after misspelled emotions and negative actions was silly, The series was still popular despite the ridiculous names, so, . . eh.
Other than that, I quite enjoyed the story, Taking into account that this is a world where actual gender doesn't really count for much but breeding abilities does, it is understandable why some men act like women.
And our heroine definitely has a lot of female characteristics,
I'm not a fan of insta love and this comes precariously close to that, I enjoyed the relationship between Lucien and Heath, They had a sweet chemistry that was appealing,
Quite amusing, all in all, This is a hard one to describe, The gender definitions are not something I had ever come across before and are surprisingly not confusing, Males can be men or ladies and females can be ladies or men, Given a forename and title and you know where someone fits in this world, Even passing reference to 'his husband' or 'her wife' and you knew the family dynamic,
I really enjoyed it, Sometimes I felt not a lot was happening but there was no crime to solve nor mystery to fathom, Two people in an arranged marriage, in love, moving through their life, There are a few misunderstandings but no drama queen moments which in itself was quite refreshing,
I hope there are more books set in this world, I love this genre, the writing quality is good but it's severely lacking creativity, Why bother creating an alternate universe of intersex people then have them follow the same old hetero/binary ways, In this universe only pairings that allow for procreation are legal, Sex may not determine gender in this universe forehead birthmarks for the males and mpreg capable uteruses for the females but the gender roles are the same.
Just utterly pointless.
Adding a "t" to the beginning of existing locations is about as creative as this author gets, In an alternative envisioning of early nineteenth century London, gender roles are very different than we see in the world todayprimarily in the fact that children can be born to both men and women.
As a result, samesex marriages are accepted and common, But that doesn't mean they always come as expected and wanted, When Lucien Timothy Hawthorne is informed his marriage has been arranged to Lord Heathcliff Eddington III, he is angry and distraught, And those feelings bring him to a gentleman's club for a discreet rendezvous under and assumed name, He is very much taken with the mysterious man he meets and even makes a plan to elope, Until he finally meets Lord Eddington and realizes he's the same man from the club, It seems like a fortunate turn of events, but things can never truly be that easyeven in an alternate history, . . Normally I find Vicktor Alexander's book to be highly creative but so poorly written that they're almost painful to read, That I continue to read after the first couple of books, is a measure of just how talented he is a plot building, After reading this book, I am very glad I persevered, Yes, the writing is still highly flawed but somehow I was carried away by the characters and plot that it didn't bother me anywhere near as much.
I hope the next book ifs released soon and I really hope that it's written with the benefit of a superior editor, Vicktor Alexander builds a world where men and women can bear children but also have the restriction placed on them like the ones present during Englands love of the Ton.
Marriages are made for benefits and political alliances, Scandal can ruin the entire line,
Lady Lucien Timothy Hawthorne is appalled to find himself betrothed with out his consent to Lord Heathcliff Eddington III, the Duke of Pompinshire.
Not all happy with this set of circumstances, he decides, while drinking at a club, to find a man he can sleep with, He finds “Robert and sleeps with him as “Timmy, ” The two correspond through the club and decide to elope, Before they can, Lucien meets his betrothed and surprised to discover that Heathcliff is Robert, It I beginning to look like a love match may come about, If they survive secrets and danger,
I love the world, Vicktor Alexander built with Groom of Convenience, It had romance, surprise plotting, love, smiles, and danger, All this combines to make Groom of Convenience a fun, exciting read and not to be missed,
The action that take place are sometimes unconventional or feel that way for a historical romance story, Example being the way Lucien acts sometimes, the adoption of Eshe, the way Heath and Lucien are affectionate among mixed company, I found I quite liked it,
I thought it was ingenious of the author to give his own spin to a historical romance and make it an mpreg read, It was fascinating and I wanted to learn more about the alternative universe where males and females were labeled by their ability to carry children ie have a uterus regardless of their physical appearance.
I really loved this book and loved that the author managed to combine two of my favorite subgenres/tropes together, I loved the amount of romance and seeing Lucien and Heath's love story unfold,
The epilogue felt a bit funny for me but I'm looking forward to reading more in the series, I liked this book even though I wouldn't say it was any real MM Romance, The setting is some kind of paranormal historical world based on our own, Children born with an uterus are girls, but if they are male they are also sons, Children born with the mark that tells they can father children are called boys, even though some of them are female and called daughters, In reality this book is a good M/F Romance and not in the need of the paranormal setting, After finishing it I still need to encounter any steampunk element, There are none.
Lucien and Heath are perfect together and their love story quite smooth, I had a good time reading it and it had that feelgood element I sometimes want when reading a book,
As a M/F romance I would give itorstars, but as a M/M I can't, The writing and the story is great, I just got too disappointed in it being, as a MM Romance group friend put it, 'a "find and replace" Emma with Emmett", or in this case, Lucy with Lucien' book.
This was such a remarkable read, with such imagination and innovation in its presentation of gender, Yes, it can get confusing, but I think that is the point, In trying to decipher and keep track of the genders and roles here, we see how foolish and shortsighted a binary system really is, Compared to a contemporary romance the plot is a bit slow, but it actually fits the Regency style, and I enjoyed the leisurely pace, I loved the twist on the mpreg kink, and thought it really brought the characters together, and as uncomfortable as it made me, I understood why the rape scene was there.
This is probably one of the most complicated reviews Ive ever written and even now as I type my thoughts are all over the place.
This is the first historical m/m romance Ive read, though historical is a loose description, because it takes place in a sort of parallel universe.
The time in this universe resembles the regency period in our world, The author changed ever so slightly the names of locations and countries in order to create this world, It is also the first mpreg book Ive read,
I wasnt sure how this would actually work reading just the blurb, but the author did a good job explaining most things for me in the authors note, the story, and cast/glossary segment at the end.
I have to tell you the process of giving birth for a male sounds quite painful, In this world there are some males who are born with male genitalia but the inside reproductive organs were female and some females born with womanly organs outside but produce sperm that can impregnate either females or males that have a uterus.
I was left wondering why males who had the female reproductive organs still had testes, since they were not able to impregnate other women and didnt produce “seed.
” I also wondered where the semen producing organs were housed inside a female with internal male reproductive organs,
I am aware that my questions are probably confusing to someone who hasnt read this, but female and male children are born with the correct outside physical characteristics that make them female and male.
However based on the internal organs they are classified as women and men, For instance the main character Lucien is physically a male, internally a woman, He holds the title of Lady but is referred to as him and called son by his parents, The opposite occurs for females that have internal male organs, They are she, but they are Lords and Dukes if so titled, and familial references are daughter and sister, Ill admit it could get very confusing, the author does say that the first names of these characters is really important when keeping everything straight, in a manner of speaking.
I did catch on fairly easy but I noticed a few discrepancies in the character introductions like a male woman being referred to His Grace, and Her Grace, though Im sure only one of those is correct.
Now that I finished setting up the situation, I have to say that I really liked this book, Before I read m/m romance, and new adult romances before that, I used to read historical romances, many of them set in the regency period.
I feel the author hit the nail on the head with his take on regency times in this alternate reality, The ton of England or Angland in this case and all its rules and hypocricies, It felt sort of like coming home when reading this book because of my previous love of historical romances, Lucien, a male woman was treated like female women are, and like women are in regency romances protected, less educated, and expected to be dutiful.
Heath, like many men in historical romances, is an alpha sort of male, He is strong and a real mans man to the people in society around him, but once he meets the female or male woman that captures his heart, there is no end to the things they would do to keep their mate happy and safe.
It really is a sweet read, and the characters had great chemistry, I liked my first mpreg read and found myself loving the idea of a males body becoming rounded from the life he is carrying, and not just because of too many sixpacks.
It didnt necessarily seem like a m/m romance because of the male womans sort of delicate nature and slighter stature compared to the male man.
But then again, there are effeminate males in todays society, I thought it was great that the author wrote this in mind that there is not just gay and straight, female and male, The story was written to shed light on transgenders, intersex, and a few other colors of the LGBT rainbow that arent often discussed, I find myself really looking forward to another story set in this universe, Perhaps my remaining questions will be answered, but even if they are not, I believe it will be a sweet romance, .
